Dir en grey

Jrock or not???

Is Dir en grey Jrock or New metal??
I and some others have had the discussion about that....
What is the right answer!?
 
Jrock. they are Japanese and a rock band. also their earlier stuff is not metal so i say Jrock for sure.
 
I was thinking about this... but I am so unsure of how is defined 'jrock' and 'new metal' that I couldn't answer. I am really not knowledgeable about music categories :sorry: because mainly I just listen and I am so backwards about all the distinctions. I don't even know the difference between new metal and other types (well, some I know, obviously, but I couldn't guarantee to be right every time! )

But I would have said they were more of 'rock' than 'metal'... although maybe I am wrong? :?
 
I don't think that "jrock" is an actual genre of music. It's a nationality of music. So yeah, Dir en Grey is obviously Japanese. As for their genre, it's pretty much metal I guess. Or you could just call them visual. Not so much anymore, though...

visual kei is not a genre of music. it's a style in how one dress. i would say that Diru is just rock since only recently they became metal and their earlier stuff vary greatly in sound.
 
Erotic grotesque is how I always describe them now. But to nail them down to a specific genre is very hard.

how do we tall appart 'Jrock' from 'Jpop'?
see... i go on my wester definitions of 'Rock' and 'Pop'..... but then someone told me Kana's clasified as Jpop... and i was like.... EH?!?
 
I don't think they're jrock anymore... But I wouldn't describe them as new metal either...

Eeh!? Kana is NOT pop At least not the stuff I've heard... Pop for me is Morning Musume, W, Aya Matsuura or Hamasaki Ayumi...
 
i just kind of think very naively... like, rock is heavier stuff than pop, and metal is heavier than rock... and after that, I just get a bit lost....
 
well.... actually there's supposibly a rule for what chords a band uses inorder the clasify them as metal (stupid as it sounds)
because Sum 41 are but in the 'metal' gunrer in music stores because of the chords they use......

rock, to me, has always been with real instuments - drums, bass, guitar as the basics, and with a real sence to the music... as soon as it becomes corprate then i'd pop-rock. then, metal... usually has in a whole load of other instuments, with a definate theam among it's lyrics - usually heavily depressing.

pop... is usually coparate market type stuff... - symphosisers, up beat stuff, usually about love and appealing to the general teen population...

but those are my definitions, lol
 
There is no way I can place Dir en grey in ANY genre. They are too FABULOUS and eclectic (LOL this is coming from a very biased fan, okay? don't yell ) and with most music I don't put it into genres or worry about that kind of thing, I just listen to it if I like it

I guess I could call them Rock though.. they are Jrock because that's just Japanese Rock.. haha. It's a very broad category. And they're not really Visual Kei anymore.. Not all Jrock is Visual Kei

I might ask my friend, who is not into the whole Jrock thing but likes Dir en grey, what genre he thinks they are.. Get an outside opinion XD

this is a good point.... i know popel who don't really spacifacally go looking for Jrock, but do like Diru.... i wonder how they'd catagorise them :?
 
mmm... i agree with PrettyPinkSpider, j-rock is about the nationality. Dir en grey is a j-rock band because they're japanese...

about the genre, i'm kinda lost too for me, their music is rock although it sounds heavier than it... but it's definitely not pop...

I remember I read an article where Kyo said he didn't want to be compared with marilyn manson and claimed that their music is rock...

but, lol, yes.... i managed to draw myself back to life enough to read your post and... i agree... but i'd say that actually... they don;t have one spacific catagory... some of their stuff is under 'rock' and some would be under 'metal'
and some sound be under 'heavey metal' - ie pink killer

Kana is Visual Kei and Pop. YES.
you can be VK and pop. vk has nothing to do with music.

Ya Diru's music REALLY varies. but they still fall into the borad "rock" category.
 
PLC can be considered Jpop/Jrock and VK. hide, i think is Jrock and VK. B'z is jpop/jrock non-VK. thats what i think.

VK is a style in how one dress themselves, so you can look VK and sing pop, or techno or whatever.

lol, i don;t think i could ever call Diru gothic rock.... their content - there's nothign 'gothic' about it...
i've heared goth rock.metal.... and.... it kinda scars me
not that the music's scary... just that... some of the content is like....

um..... ok.....

neh, Diru are most definatly not goths... i know goths, and they're not it....
(just because someone wears black doesn't make them a 'goth' - no matter what some people may believe )

but i don;t think... as far as western 'genres' go... they'd be clasified as 'goth rock'

goth rock is usually about committing suicide with your lover under a rose bush growing over an abandond old church whilest screwing....

but the fat is... a lot of 'goths' don't listen to 'goth rock'....
actually... a lot of the people who go round saying they're 'goths' now-a-days... listen to... i dunno, savege garden or something...

for the past.... 5 years, i've had people shouting 'goth' at me or the ever so annoying 'are you a goth?'

geees... just because i wear dark clothing, happend to carry a depressed look on my face most of the time and wear dog collers and heavey eyeliner... dose NOT make me a goth...

no... really, i don't look like a goth... if anything, for a time i looked like a 'metaler', but not a goth... tho... i do have some 'goth' outfits

i would say if you were to 'catagorise' Diru int any wester genrer, they'd fall under metal.
some of their songs would be melodic, some symphonic, some heavey, some... possibly even death metal... but... not goth - goth bands tend to have femalevocalists anyways....

*has just remebered that Nightwish are sometimes considered a goth band* - um, their image is.. but their genrer is symphonic metal
 
I sort of think of goth music as being a kind of mishmash between The Mission, The Sisters of Mercy, Eve of Destiny, Moi dix Mois, and a cement mixer being operated by a piccolo player.

EDIT: although I do actually like it...
 
well the question was if Diru fit into metal or jrock. i think it's pretty easy to answer.

but i think Diru are both.....
Jrock is Japanese rock, and metal is a derivative from rock... therefore you can be Jrock metal.....
 
but their earlier songs are nothing like metal, so i'd say just jrock.

AFI started out scar
now.... i dunno... maybe they're some sotr of goth-y type emo-ish-sortta rock.... maybe....
