Desktop Blows!! Laptop Sucks !!

Here we go again! My desktop PC died in the middle of a new post. It instantly lost power so I suspect the 5 year old power supply blew? Just had it in the repair shop for a month last October. I'm going to install a new supply tomorow and pray that's all that was bad.If there was a surge when it blew, I may have bigger problems, like needing a new CPU or motherboard.
In the mean time I'll check in using the laptop which I hate with a passion to type on. Think I'll pick up a standard keyboard to plug into the laptop and enjoy using it more. Wish me luck and pray to the PC GOD to help me out tomorrow!

About pc vs. laptop: I use both, for work desktop and bring laptop at home. I like my laptop, only because I can take it with me for work etc...and it doesn't use much space.

However, when sitting in front of the computer for more than 6 hours, 8 hours, I prefer a desktop.

I Got Away With It For A Long Time !

I built this PC 3 years ago and used the 300 Watt power supply that came with the tower. I knew it was under powered. I hope to get at least a 500 Watt supply today to swap out the burned one. The big question is , did anything else take a hit when it blew. I'll say a little prayer that the new supply will bring it up and running smooth! It's not impossible that the CPU or motherboard were damaged, I sure hope not, hate this laptop.

Error Message ???

HUMMM??? Got my new power supply in and the system started OK. Within 5 minutes of startup, I got a big blue screen error message :

KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR

It said to reset and a few other things to check. It restarted OK and seems fine now. The big difference I noticed with the new supply is a 4 PIN motherboard supply line along with the 12 PIN. My old supply had no 4 PIN. I pluged in the new 4 PIN into the motherboard and wonder if that caused the error> Maybe I have to change something in the BIOS now that I have the new 4 PIN hooked up? Anyone got any clues on this one?

Kernel is part of the operating system. Stack refers to data read into the memory. So the error message sounds like a soft error, not a hardware error.

What caused it? That is a mystery. Could be faulty reading from the hard disk, some unknown software bug (by MS, sure!), or could be a random shower of cosmic rays changing a bit 0 to 1 or vice versa (or even a secret nuclear test?) which happens to every other puter at random.

But since everytings working now, nothing to worry. Bty, this can happen w/o any virus; though can't rule it out. Just kidding! ;-)

I'm not familiar with the 4-pin connection. If it is an ATX power connection, then where did you stick it in??? If connected to the wrong place, the 3 volt (?) charage could fry components, aiks!
But since you say the machine's working fine, it could be some control signal hookup, but I'd rather play safe and disconnect the 4 pins.
For make sure I'd call tech. support or the vendor for exact specs and instructions.

Dont feel ad, when my family got our first computer, we spent hours on the phone with the Gateway Customer Service people. They told us to hold the phone down by the CD drive, so the engineers could hear a new noise that had never happened before. I had a primitive CD burner, the catch was the drive burned grooves into hte disk.

After a while, we finally junked it, and got a Dell, which to this day has never died, or hiccuped. I still to this day say the gateway we had, was posessed by a Banshee or a Computer Demon. Anyone know how to perform an exorcism on hard drives.

If your motherboard has a 4pin and a 12pin hookup, and your power supply has the plugs, connect them both. It is recommended. It helps supply the extra power needed by today's standards of computer hardware. Especially the P4 and AMD 64 processors.
