Soda's the common term here in Cali...
...of course, "Cali" isn't a common term in Cali, I just felt like calling it that for some weird reason.
Anyway, it's usually either "soda" or whatever the name is for the specific drink...
...root beer get's a little interesting, since there's about 5,000 varieties--and they all taste different.
Personally, I prefer A&W, becuase it's smooth--Barq's is kind of "sharp" if that makes any sense (their slogan is "Barq's Has Bite") and it's more carbonated than most others, the there's Mug, which is somewhere inbetween A&W and Barq's...
...same sorta' deal with the lemon lime sodas: You have 7up, which is really sharp and has alot of carbonation (I can't even taste the flavoring in that one), and then you have Sprite, with less carbonation and a more mellow taste...
...so sometimes you have to be specific about what type you want.
But usually it's either "soda" or "Cola", "Root Beer", or whatever fruit flavor takes your fancy...
...and for some reason I've never been able to understand, I have the odd habit of slipping into a southern accent--even though I've never been to the south.
I hear tell some of my folks're from Texas, so that could explain it I reckon.
