Can't manage to see japanese letters

I'm trying to see japanese letters instead of those squares. I go to "see", then "encoding" and then press japanese but when it starts to install it it asks me for the "Windows XP Home edition service pack 1 CD" but I've never had that cd. It never came with my computer. What can I do? Can I download any other program to be able to see japanese properly?

You can use your regular windows xp cd. Failing that you should have a 'recovery cd'. Otherwise you've been ripped off or are running an illegal copy of XP.

Usually when u go to a japanese site it will ask you if u want to isntall the driver in order to see japanese letters, so just try that.

umm if that doesnt work dowload the IME from microsoft website or use a third party program like NJSTAR communicater

Heh. I can see Japanese characters, but can't write them. My friend told me of the IMEs, but I have to have office xp installed in order to use them.

My brother also said there's already a program on Windows XP that allows you to type in romajin, then turn it into Japanese. Anyone know about this prog?

Yes, that program is the IME. And no, you don't need to have Office installed in order to type Japanese.
Go to Start->Control Panel->Region and language options. On the "Language" tab, make sure that both checkboxes are checked, and confirm with OK. Have your XP CD handy to install those files. After installation, re-enter that dialog, and click on the button in the upper half of the Language tab. Here, click on the "Add" button right of the list field. Now, select "Japanese" from both drop down boxes and click OK. Confirm both open dialogs with OK.
Now, look in the taskbar for some item saying "US" (or "EN" or "DE"... depending on your keyboard layout). Click on it and select "JP - Japanese". Now right-click on it and select "Restore Input area scheme toolbar" (or something the likes). This will show you a bar with several options. On the bar, click on "A Input mode" and select "Hiragana". Now you can type away. Your input will be automatically converted to hiragana. Pressing Space will convert them to kanji. Hit Space again to show a list with several options to choose from.
