Big Dreams, Little Tokyo

Has anyone else seen, or seen about this movie... It looks pretty funny, and features a non-Japanese Japanese speaker... It deals with the way that people outside of Japan, non-Japanese, and half-Japanese deal with becoming a part of Japanese society...

It's an independent film and has a prerequisite amount of real Japanese spoken in the movie (with subtitles) that make it seem not to be exploitative in any way... it does seem sincere in its efforts...

It's an independant film, and the production shows, it doesn't have any big actors, or big directors.

Big Dreams Little Tokyo is the story of Boyd, an American with an uncanny ability to speak Japanese. Boyd aspires to succeed in the world of Japanese business but finds himself mostly on the outside looking in. Meanwhile, his roommate Jerome, is a Japanese American who has always felt too American to be Japanese but too Japanese to be American. He aspires to be a sumo wrestler but finds his weight and blood pressure are thwarting his dreams. Together they struggle to find their place in a world where cultural identity is seldom what it seems.

Seems interesting, to say the least.

One funny part of the movie (shown in the trailer) has Boyd (the white male) being berated by a Japanese American, who says, "no matter how many times you bow, you'll never be Japanese... Go Home, this is Japantown..." (in reference to the Japanese enclave in an American town somewhere...).

I wonder if I can find this movie somewhere..

Its still kicking around the festival circuit. Probably won't come out on DVD till next year, I'm guessing.

It's a shame, with movies like this... some of the more interesting titles take so much longer to propagate, because they don't even have wide-theatrical releases... Well, I'll be anxious to see it, whenever I hopefully have the chance.
