As for the present and collector's Japanese sword, it was originally meant for Samurais, yes, and it was very well also meant for behaedings, for example. In fact, if you see the mentioned film, you will also see, that beheadings were also used for trying the sword out. . .In the war at least.
If and how this also applies to the original use, has to be found out via google, I suppose.
But it is commonly known in relation to japanese swords.
Another point is, this film has been shown in several places, incl. sundance in the USA with very high scores, which is as much frequented by international visitors, thus its very wellknown already. Also here in Berlin it was shown several times. . . with as many international visitors. The film itself is a warning on many subjects, but based on this sword. . .and it comes out in April. . .
So, whoever might have thought, that "incidence" (see pugtm) was just an exception, must have changed its mind in that relation, particularly since certain memories keep coming up in relation to sword and cruelty and Japan. . .
To make the final bow would in fact be, to observe the whole Japanese sword business with more attention. . .that "incident" may very well have only confirmed and forced this.
Its a different thing with certain japanese (spiritual!) sword exercises, which is the result of a very wise use of the sword and includes the fact, that the exerciser in the normal life does not even need a sword any more. But thats another story alltogether.
In fact, it comes to my mind, that the sword in about this form comes from China (further developped in Japan). We all know many according films indeed. But also in their films, it is often used in a far more spiritual sense, hoping for grown up watchers. As is in many animes/Mangas.
But the present tendencies, to put this into deadly action, makes it very well necessary to observe it.
Why just japanese swords, well, see the first lines.
I personally would think, it should cover a wider range of observation than just Japan.
As for the Samurais, to my knowledge, at least all higher ranks, not only Samurais, had one at least, to correct myself. But maybe some know better?
