Attitude towards pregnant women

Hi,

I'm not sure this is the right place to post this, but what is the attitude towards pregnant women in Japan? Are they "allowed" to be in public? In some cultures,pregnant women are "hidden" away,and I just wonder will the japanese feel discomfort in the presence of a pregnant woman?

I never asked a Japanese pregnant woman personally, but I saw lots of them shopping. I don't think anyone had a problem with seeing a pregnant woman. There are also special areas set aside on the trains for woman who are pregnant, so I would say Japan is accommodating.

no, that doesn't happen as far as I know.

Silver seats on buses, trains and subways pretty much suggest pregnant women are "welcome" in public. Have seen them around many times (the women, not just the seats), and my own wife had no fear being around when she was pregnant.

Many municipalities and railway companies are handing out "maternity mark" (labels and tags saying "baby in me" with a nice picture) on request so that it will be easier for people around to recognize it and offer a seat on the bus or train.

Yes...absolutely no problem at all. The knowledge of societies which tend to hide pregnant women are surely very few, I take it, however.

If you are pregnant, and want to come to Japan...I say, 'Bring him/her on!' (I just couldn't resist...it's election year in the US, and that old line just kind of popped up now)

Thanks for all of you - makes me feel at ease. Thought Japan would be a good choice anyway since it sounds quite safe and hygienic. This is another thread,but don't know where to post it so I'll ask it here: Are there any diseases to be aware of? Most of the Asia suffer from malaria etc. but how about Japan?

aww that's nice/cute! I never knew about those, though I've seen the seats marked for elderly & pregnant women.
