I've been in Hokkaido for a year and a half now. It's early December. Last night, I passed through Susukino (the night club district), and for the past two weeks I've just been marvelling at the sights as I go around Odori and the Eki-mae area (just north of said club district).
What sights? Dozens and dozens of girls in mini-skirts and knee-high boots. It's freezing out. There is a layer of ice and snow over the city. And the girls are shivering... And still, they persevere ( ﾅ?ﾃｦ窶卍｣窶堙ｪﾂ！). And let's not consider the logic of the long heels in a city of ice. Luckily they all have health insurance.
Thing is, I saw a lot of thigh here in the summer, but it seems to be all the more conspicuous now that winter has come. I'm not complaining. Seriously, I'm not. It's pretty delirious at times (like the young lady with beautifully permed hair I saw this morning wearing what looked like nothing but knee-highs, a long coat and a beret this morning... I was too moral to pull out my cell camera)
So, topic for discussion: Are girls across the country so impervious to weather, or is it a product of Hokkaido's particularly crap weather? Have you seen the girls here? I remember a friend telling me years ago that the girls here showed skin, but it's only now sinking in. I've only lived in Okinawa and Hokkaido, so though I've been to most of the country, I'm just not an expert on this topic. In Okinawa, girls dress down a lot, there's no proper downtown, and it seems, not conservative, but dressed down in comparison.
The nice fashions this year? Furry collars. Knee-boots. Furry ankles on short boots. Coats slightly longer than their mini-skirts. Big scarves. And thighs. There were a lot of "tattoo tights" this year, nylons that had things like flowers or tribal markings on them, but in the last few weeks, they've mostly disappeared for a starker flesh tone.
It's hard not to meditate on, but maybe that's just me.
