Americans eating sushi and sashimi everyday

I can get full quickly when eating sushi. Last night, I made futomaki and inari zushi and I could only eat a couple of pieces of both. As Glenski said, it is much more nutritious and balanced. In the futomaki alone, we get seaweed, rice, egg, mushrooms, kanpyo, cucumber, ginger, and mitsuba. That is a pretty good balance all rolled up into just that one type of sushi.

At the local market I go to, I see these white Americans buy sushi (with the raw fish on top) practically everyday. I have never had the chance to try sushi or sashimi because I am still kinda freaked out of eating raw fish. Serious question? Do Japanese people eat raw fish everyday? Is it cancerous to do so? Can you occasionally get sick?

Yes, sushi has made great inroads in the U.S. It's sold at most of my local supermarkets now and I'm in the middle of the U.S. far from any centers of fashion though I am in a region with over two million people. I'm also surprised that it is popular enough for so many places to sell it. Especially since the sushi is crap compared to the super-fresh stuff you can get in Japan.

A lot of the sushi sold in U.S. supermarkets do not actually contain raw fish. Even if it looks raw, it might be smoked salmon for example. So if you're curious, pick out some that don't contain raw seafoods and give it a try. Usually the packaging will clearly say whether or not it contains raw fish.

As other people have stated, you're probably eating far more dangerous things already. For example, the carbon from grilled red meats is, I believe, a known carcinogen. On the other hand, the incidencen of stomach cancer in Japan is higher than the U.S. so there is some difference there. (But the U.S. is higher in practically everything else so sticking to a Japanese diet is healthier overall.)

me too! my pile of plates is pretty small when I visit kaiten zushi shops, about 3 or 4 is my limit.
I also make inari sushi - yum!!-, but can only eat 2 or 3 pieces. With nabe though, it is possible to eat for hours hehe

We eat very traditional food. Rice is the main dish - side dishes include, grilled fish, tofu, pickles, miso soup (with egg and veges) and other seasonal veges. Tonight is oden though ;)

I'm amazed everytime my girlfriend and I go out to sushi here. We always look around then bet on who's gonna have the tallest tower of plates. I think the record I've seen for a single person was 24. My record was 7 or 8 I think.
