Ainu group seeks indigenous status

TOKYO — The Ainu Association of Hokkaido has urged the central and local governments to recognize the Ainu as indigenous people in light of the United Nations General Assembly's adoption of a declaration on the rights of indigenous peoples around world, its official said Wednesday.

In petitions submitted to Hokkaido Gov Harumi Takahashi and the Hokkaido prefectural assembly, the largest group of Ainu people, based in Sapporo, requested the local authorities to persuade the central government to recognize that the Ainu fall under the category of indigenous peoples under the U.N. declaration.

I am sorry but I don't understand this. The Ainus were the original Japanese. The first inhabitants of the Japanese islands
They look different from the Japanese of today, that is true.
But they ARE Japanese. Or not?

yes they are Japanese and also one of japanese origin
most ppls who are living eastern Japan like tohoku have a same DNA of ainu

i dont think so.
there are many ppls who look like Ainu in Japan
if they are in tokyo, we can not recognized they are Today's Ainu.
of course, if they are in Hokkaidou as a group, I would understand it.
