HACHINOHE, Aomori--An anonymous donor left 40 million yen in cash in a public toilet at the Hachinohe municipal government office in Aomori Prefecture with a note asking that the money be given to four prefectures affected by the March 11 disaster, according to city officials.

Bundles of 10,000 yen bills in a paper bag were found in a tote bag in the toilet.
A letter in a paper bag containing the cash said the donor wanted to donate 10 million yen each to Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures, according to the municipal office. The donor signed the letter, "Tohokujin," meaning a person from the Tohoku region...

I think it is wonderful that someone donates money for the victims of disasters, but I wonder why that person is doing that this way. Why not just give the money to the mayor, the red cross, etc? Maybe someone would take the money and run off (it's rare in Japan, but I'm sure that someone would do it).

Also, if you would give such an amount of money, does that mean anything for your taxes, etc?

wanted to remain unknown because when you donate large sums , everyone starts asking you to donate to their cause. Then you have news people wanting to interview you and know everything about you. Have to admit , leaving it in a toilet is sure different.

This is not the first time that anonymous benefactors in Japan have chosen toilets to leave cash. On September 29, an anonymous donor left 10 million yen ($131,000) to charity by dumping it in a public toilet. The money was found with a letter saying it should be donated to the victims of the earthquake and tsunami.
In 2007, 400 blank envelopes containing 10,000-yen notes were found in the toilets of local council buildings across the country. Most of that money appears to have been handed in to the police. The mysterious donor was never found.

I'm a bit more impressed that someone found 40 mil with that note and still brought it in.
