The jouyou kanji are the 1945 essential (and most used) kanji needed for everyday life in Japan as appointed by the Japanese Ministry of Education. Knowledge of them are needed to do things such as read Japanese Newspapers, pass the JLPT 1-4, etc.

Well, that is not entirely true. I do not think that kanji like 匁 and 寸 (both jouyou kanji) are used more than kanji like 俺 (non-jouyou kanji).

Perhaps not, but I just wanted to illustrate the fact that just because a kanji is jouyou does not mean that it is among the most commonly used. Do you disagree?

I beg to differ.
The frequency of use for 俺 is 1946.
The frequency of use for 寸 is 1669.

匁 didn't have a frequency of use, so you might be quite right about that one!

Frankly I take those frequency of use numbers with a very big pinch
of salt.

Google may be unscientific and inaccurate but it is also a bang up to date source of 'in the wild' figures. It says :
俺+の 1,370,000 pages
寸+の 231,000 pages
匁+の 9,570 pages

Which matches my expectations from my Japanese reading.
(You need the の on a standard www.google.com search to avoid Chinese
pages)

P.S. I have done some extensive work on a practical, if
unscientific 'frequency of use' based selection of kanji / words.
If you use Kanji Gold check out 'KG_Top6Words.zip' at

ftp.cc.monash.edu.au/pub/nihongo/00INDEX.html

If you haven't tried Kanji Gold I recommend it.

Essentially it is based on the attempted inclusion of all kanji that
have a Japanese word (excluding proper names) in existence which have
more than 3,000 Google hits or a higher than 50 count in the
wordfreq_ck.gz file [Same archive based on examination of four years
of the Mainichi Shimbun.]

The kanji site has a great kanji listing, which i used to supplement my practice for grade 2 (only about a 1000 kanji). There are many many kanji, you should start with the 4th grade ones and work your way up.
