Hi,

1.

Is 食べられます potential form in both these sentences?

Translation given: "That girl couldn't take things down in longhand, let alone shorthand."

Does この前の娘 mean "the previous girl" in the sense of a girl who used to work here but was replaced by someone else?

I get "I am much older than her...", but can't decipher the rest of it. I know it's something about being a junior at work, but I have no clue what もう何年も会社 means.

(Edited) ... Oh, could it mean something like "I have now been her junior at work for many years"?

4. The author has been explaining how traditional Japanese houses have removable ふすま and しょうじ to allow ventilation in the hot and humid season, but that modern rooms are increasingly built in concrete, and require air conditioning. Then:

I am trying to interpret the core structure as それは~となっているのである, meaning that modern construction methods have become ~.

I understand that 二酸化炭素とともにヒートアイランド現象 means "carbon dioxide, along with the 'heat island' phenomenon", and that 「温暖化」の原因の一つ means "one of the causes of global warming", but I do not understand how という links all this together.

1)
Yes.

2)
It might be so. But この前の娘 can mean この前までいた娘(= your interpretation), この前話した娘, この前来た娘, etc., so it might be "the girl we were talked about the other day" or like that.

3)
Yes, your translation is correct. But the example sentence sounds odd to me. It's strange to connect 彼女よりずっと年上 and 後輩 with the natural conjunction で. I think it should be like followings.

ヒートアイランド現象 is a state of 温暖化, and それ(= modern rooms built in concrete) is one of the the causes of it(= ヒートアイランド現象) along with 二酸化炭素.

3. Sorry, you are right. I somehow made an error with the transcription. It should be 先輩 not 後輩. That might make more sense...!

4. Do you mean that それ is one of the causes of ヒートアイランド現象, and それ is also one of the causes of 二酸化炭素?

Or is it that それ is one of the causes of ヒートアイランド現象, and 二酸化炭素 is also one of the causes of ヒートアイランド現象?

4)
The latter. それ and 二酸化炭素 are the causes of ヒートアイランド現象, which is a phase/example of 温暖化.

Is it possible grammatically (i.e. ignoring considerations about what actually makes most sense) that the sentence could be parsed as

?

Or are there grammatical reasons why とともに must link それ and 二酸化炭素?

If それ is the causes of two phenomena and とともに is used, the structure それは、都市のヒートアイランド現象の原因の一つであるとともに、地球全 体の温暖化の原因の一つにもなっている would be more common.Or, more simply, it's それは、都市のヒートアイランド現象と地球全体の温暖化の原因の一つにな っている without using ともに.

A and B would be usually interpreted as a set in the first structure. When B is a predicate, the second one would be more common, I think.
