Hi,


1. 今銀行にあるお金は全部合わせて１２０万円ですが、礼金も払わなければならないと聞いてるし、買わなければいけない家具もあるし、少しは貯金がないと、心配だし・・・。

My translation: "I currently have a total of 1,200,000 yen in the bank, but I hear I have to pay a deposit, and then there's furniture to buy, and I would be worried if I didn't have a little money saved." (i.e. I would be worried if I had to spend the whole 1,200,000 yen on deposit, furniture etc., and then had no savings left).

Is this right, especially the interpretation at the end in brackets?


2. え～っ、給料が手取り十三万五千円で、家賃が八万円なんて、あんた暴挙としかいいようがないわよ。

I get "Wow, your take-home pay is 135,000 yen, and rent is 80,000 yen ...", and then I'm stuck. What does the last part mean?


3. だけど住居として絶対にゆずれない条件を満たすものはこれくらい出さないとなかったのである。

My translation: "However, to satisfy the conditions (of the contract) on my property that I couldn't possibly escape, I had to (keep on) paying this amount."

a) Does 出す have the sense of "pay" (i.e. presumably pay rent)?

b) I am unsure of the function of として. Does 住居として・・・条件 go together to mean the terms under which the speaker was occupying his residence?


4. The context is that the writer is living in an expensive apartment:

マンションを探すときだって、どれだけ不動産屋のおじさんに、嫌味をいわれたり説教をされたかわからない。

To me this looks like it ought to mean:

"When I was looking for an apartment, I didn't realise how much I would have to suffer disagreeable/sarcastic sermons from estate agents."

a) However, my tense of わからない is wrong, and I can't see how to get it right and still create a plausible sentence. What am I misunderstanding? Perhaps the subject is not "I", but the speaker is instead cautioning others about what will/would happen if/when they look for an apartment? I really have no idea...

b) Also, as usual, I am not clear about the purpose of だって (unless it means "too"???)

礼金も払わなければならない, 買わなければいけない家具もある, 少しは貯金がないと心配だ are all the reasons the speaker thinks １２０万円 might be not enough.

It's a kind of rhetorical expression.
I can't understand/count how frequently/many times I heard sermons. = I heard countless sermons.

1. I'm still having some difficulty with this. I understand 貯金がないと心配だ to mean "I'm worried that I have no savings", but is 少しは referring to the extent that the speaker is worried, or to the smallness of the savings? Also, he's said that he has １２０万円, so how can 貯金がない be true?

3. Could you explain the function of として in this sentence?

The latter. That's 少しはないと.
He has 1.2 million yen now, but he wants to leave a certain amount of money after paying the deposit and buying furnitures, so it might be not enough.

Sorry, だって is more likely も as "even" in this case.

1. So, sorry to labour this simple point, but 貯金がない would mean he has no savings, yet 少しは貯金がない means that he does have some savings (i.e. the 1.2 million yen mentioned earlier), but these savings are only a small amount. Is that right?

I read the sentence as the speaker not considering that money as savings, as it seems to be "spoken for" (earmarked) already. Savings would be money other than that which you can reasonably expect to get eaten up by short-term or foreseeable expenses.

So he has 1.2m yen....but 0 savings. Make sense?

Yeah, I, too, think so. He wants a certain amount of money left for unexpected expenses.
