So when you say 期限を過ぎて, it doesn't make sense to replace with 期限切れ.
Similarly, they are not swappable here:
期限切れを防ぐ = avoid becoming late/going overdue
期限を守る = keep to the deadline

The last two examples you give might be the closest - one says the deadline is close, one says you're close to being past-deadline/expired.
