I am reading a news article about a robot show in America, in particular they are talking about a テレプレゼンス ロボット Telepresense robot.

In the next sentence is the meaning of 最初のこれ first time this? and 開かれた to hold?

筆者が最初のこれを見かけたのは昨年、アメリカシリコ ンバレーで開かれたロボット関連の会議でだった。

I am interpreting the sentence as.....

The author happened to see this (telepresence robot) the first time while at last year's robot related meeting held in America's silicon valley.

筆者 would refer to "I" in this case.

開かれた is passive "to be held", as in your translation.
