新しい常用漢字！

If anyone is interested, here is a list i found of the newest additions to the 常用漢字。 This past week an additional 196 characters or so were added, a few removed, and the result is a new total of 2136 characters.

So just when you thought you were done (I finished Heisig this past spring and thought I was done) here are another few to learn:

Interesting list, but I'm failing to see much of a purpose for this change. It seems like the people on the standards committee are just giving themselves something to do.

The Kanji Kentei organization isn't going to jump to revamp their tests and study materials around this change.
Ordinary Japanese people couldn't care less what kanji are on the joyo kanji list (if they even know what the joyo kanji are at all).

And some of the decisions still seem to be hugely arbitrary. What's the point of adding 阪 to the list, but leaving out its most relevant reading, or likewise for 媛?

I think it's mostly to affect what characters are "allowable" in print, although admittedly that only applies to newspapers and perhaps magazines -- literature uses any character they please (e.g., 暗澹).

If you've finished Heisig you're pretty much there anyway. It's just another 94 characters that you're likely to pick up from reading Wikipedia (you'll get more than 94 that way, I'm sure).
