Hello,

1. 嬉しさのあまりとび上がった。

Translation given: "I was too glad not to jump up."

I'm assuming 嬉しさのあまり means something like "great happiness", and とび上がった means "jumped up", but I don't see how the two are grammatically joined to give what I'm assuming is a meaning roughly like "I jumped up with great happiness" (or, more idiomatically, "I jumped for joy"). Shouldn't there be some particle or joining word corresponding to English "with"/"for"?

Edited: Sorry, I just realised that あまり can be an adverb, so I guess that would explain it?

(I don't see where any "too glad not to" meaning exists in the Japanese.)

2. 今度、娘さんが東京大学を受けるそうですね。

Does this mean "I hear your daughter is sitting the Tokyo University entrance exam this time"?

3. These are points listed at the start of a reading comprehension exercise:

1. 段落ごとに何について書いてあるかみる。
2. 指示語、代名詞が何を指しているのかをみる。
3. それぞれの「違い」と「共通点」をみる。

I assume みる is an imperative?

My translation:

1. Look at what has been written about in each paragraph.
2. Look at what the demonstratives and pronouns refer to.
3. Look at the respective differences and similarities.

a) Why does #1 use Vかみる and #2 use Vみる? Is there any significance to this?

b) Is #3 talking about differences and similarities in the paragraphs or in the demonstratives/pronouns?

Yes, あまり is used adverbially here. ~のあまりに also can be used.

"Too glad not to jump up" can be translated to 飛び上がらないようにするには嬉し過ぎる(too literally, of course) or like that. It can be said the core concept is close to the original. 😅

2)
今度 would be more likely "the next/upcoming entrance exam" here. It can refer to the exam almost a year later from now.

3) a)
No, I don't think so. ~かみる, ~のかみる, ~かをみる, ~のかをみる are basically interchangeable.

b)
Grammatically, both interpretations are possible. But the latter seems appropriate in excercise, I suppose.
