Hi,

1. 「君は甘い」ロンがいった。「君自身が名誉を重んじ、信用できる人間だからといって」

a) Grammatically, does 名誉を重んじ modify 人間? Is that possible?

b) When 言った is meant literally like this, as far as I can recall, these books almost invariably write it 言った and not いった. Is there any significance in it being written いった? If not, does it seem odd or inconsistent to randomly vary the way it is written?

2. ハーマイオニーが席に着くや否や、ネビル、ディーン、フレッド、ジョージ、ジニーが待ってましたとばかりにやって来た。

I fear this may be a dumb question, but is 待ってました = 待っていました? I thought that was a conversational form, both in respect of the ~ます element and also the dropping of the い. However, this is a part of the narrative, not dialogue. I am puzzled why this form would be used in the narrative. It seems anomalous.

3. クラスの注意が、いつもよりもっと自分から離れているのもまった気づかず、平成そのものだ。

The story is primarily narrated in the past tense, but from time to time a sentence in the present tense is inserted. I think I remember being told that this was to increase vividity, or something like that. In English, a switch to present tense in the middle of a past tense narrative would seem highly stylised. Am I right in thinking that it is a more normal and usual device in Japanese?

4. ハーマイオニーは羽根ペンさえ下に置いた。

Is 下 pronounced した here? Is it always prounced した in cases like this?

5. クラッブとゴイルが腕を屈伸させながら、いつでもかかってこいとばかり、マルフォイの前に進み出た。

Is 「いつでもかかってこい」 a taunt? Is it こい as in 来い? What does the かかって part mean?

Long time no see, eeky-san! So, you've started reading the fifth Harry Potter book.👍

1) a)
Yes and yes. The structure is 「名誉を重んじ、信用できる」人間, so it can be rephrased as 信用でき、名誉を重んじる人間.

b)
Actually, it sometimes happens. There is no difference if it's written ロンが言った (Kanji is more common, as you know).

2)
待ってましたとばかりに works as almost a set phrase.
google search results
待ってましたとばかりに 264,000
待っていましたとばかりに 85,100
待っていたとばかりに 44,900
待ってたとばかりに 32,400

待ってました is a yell shouted by the audience in the theater when the main character or popular actor/actress appears.

3)
?

Yes, your understanding is correct.

4)
Yes, it's した. しも or もと are also possible when meaning under, bottom, second half, or like that.
e.g.
我々は彼の下[もと]に集まった。
We gathered under him.

5)
かかる【掛かる】
I 12 〔攻める〕
二人で強盗に掛かって行った
The two of them jumped the burglar.
レスラーは子供が数人掛かってもびくともしなかった
The wrestler did not move an inch even before the combined attack of several children.
さあ,掛かって来い
OK, come on!
掛かれ
Go!
猟犬たちはおおかみに掛かって行った
The hounds went at [for] the wolf.

Hi again Toritoribe, and thank you as always for your reply.

1a) I assume that 名誉を重んじ人間 is wrong, yes? Is 名誉を重んじる、信用できる人間 also possible?

3) Yes, it should be 平静 of course.

Oh, and could you confirm in (5) whether こい is 来い?

Yes, it's 来い, as in an example sentence in the dictionary I quoted above.

さあ,掛かって来い
OK, come on!
