Hello,

1. 人の迷惑になることはしてはいけません。

I am unsure how to parse the second half of the sentence. Is it こと・は・して・は・いけません? Is that grammatical?

Does the whole thing mean something like "Don't annoy people"?


2. そんなに文句を言うなら、あなた一人でしたらどうです か。

Again, unsure how to parse. Is it 一人・で・したら or 一人・でしたら?

And what does it mean? Something like "If you complain like that, how about you do it by yourself"??? (very unsure!)


3. 自動車が来たから、よけないと危ないですよ。

Literal (and intentionally klunky) translation given: "A car is coming and it will be dangerous if you don't move away from its path."

I seem to be having a blank about 来た. Why is it translated as "is coming" (present tense)?


4. プロがアマチュア選手と違うのは、プロはそれでお金を もらって生活している点です。

What is the the role of それで here? (I understand the rest of it OK).

1. Yeah, although it may be better to think of してはいけません as a single unit meaning prohibition. The meaning you got pretty close: "don't be a bother to other people."

2. 一人・で・したら, and yes, it means "how about doing it by yourself?"

3. This one's a bit hard to understand, but if you think of it in terms of someone (or people) expecting someone (or thing) to show up, and when they (it) becomes visible (or their presence otherwise becomes known), the one(s) expecting it shouts 来た！it may be easier to swallow. Now the question for me becomes whether this 来た phrasing means that the car(s) was expected. I'm pretty sure I've only ever heard this kind of 来た when someone (or thing) was expected, anyway.

4. それ is whatever the pros and amateurs do, and で indicates that it's a means for earning a living.

Interesting. Yeah, as Glenn-san explained, 来た is used when something/someone expected becomes visible, whereas 来る is for unexpected ones(e.g. 誰か来るよ/車が来るよ). However, 来た is also used when something/someone unexpected comes close to the place or has just arrived there. For instance, when I hear the doorbell ring, I would say 誰か来たよ. The example sentence would be for this case.

So am I right in assuming that if the car wasn't expected by the speaker and they said 来た it would mean that it would pretty much be too late to 避ける? In other words, the calm tone of the original example sentence provided by eeky would be inappropriate for a case where the speaker wasn't expecting the car(s) to come. Does that sound right?

I think this 来た is the present perfect tense. When we see an expected person/thing, we feel the action "coming" is completed, since we know that his/its destination is here (JIMO).

自動車が来るから is used when no car is actually coming（来るかもしれないから） or a car is coming but still distant（来てるから）. 来た means a car is actually coming and close to the speaker's place, although it might be still away enough to move out.
