Is よせ the abrupt imperative of 止す?


2. 観客は映画がクライマックスの間すすり泣きした。

Translation given: "The audience sobbed throughout the climax of the movie."

I'm a bit unsure here about the use of が. Is クライマックス treated as a verb (perhaps with an implied する)? Or does it mean the same as 映画のクライマックスの間...?


3. どちらの方

Translation given: "both of you".

(This is an isolated phrase and there is no further context.)

Is this right? I though it mean "*which* of you"...


4. オーブントースターのタイマーが鳴る。食パンがコンガリ焼けた、香ばしい匂い。

Translation given: "The toaster-oven's timer rings. The fragrant smell of well toasted bread."

Do 食パンがコンガリ焼けた and 香ばしい both modify 匂い?

What is the meaning of で here?

In (2), is が a substitute for の, per the dictionary definition "indicates possessive (esp. in literary expressions)", or does it have some other grammatical purpose?

I think it's simply the subject marker.

映画がクライマックスだ --> 映画がクライマックスの間
彼女が学生だ --> 彼女が学生の間
物価が高い --> 物価が高い間
部屋がきれいだ --> 部屋がきれいな間
彼が日本にいる --> 彼が日本にいる間

I see, thanks. I think, then, that クライマックスmust have a slightly different usage in Japanese. If I'm understanding you correctly, 映画がクライマックスの間 implies that the movie is a climax. In English this doesn't really make sense. Instead the movie would reach a climax (for example), or we could talk about the climax of the movie.

For interest, does 映画のクライマックスの間 ("during the climax of the movie") also sound correct in Japanese?

映画がクライマックスだ might be more close to 映画がクライマックスの状態にある, as same as 彼女が学生の状態にある.

Yes, it's acceptable, but が and の are not always interchangeable in that structure. For instance, 彼女の学生の間 sounds odd, probably because 彼女の学生 doesn't make sense unlike 映画のクライマックス.
