もう、そろそろ...

Hi. I have this short dialogue. I have tried to translate it into English as best I can. Could anyone run through it and correct it as necessary?

A: もう、そろそろ、しつれいします。 "I must be going now."

B: まだ、いいじゃありませんか。 "It isn't good yet, is it?" (lit.) = some pleasantry such as "Must you go so soon?"

A: もう、おそくなりましたし、うちの近くは、１０時ごろ 、バスがなくなってしまいますので。 "I'm already running late...", then there is some stuff about a bus near his home at around ten o'clock, but I'm uncertain about なくなってしまいます. My guess is "bus is not-becoming end-up", or, in English, "... I'll miss my bus home at 10 o'clock". Is this anywhere near correct?

B: そうですか。じゃ、また、ぜひ来てください。 "I see. Well, please come again some time."

なくなってしまいます：
consists of "なくなる＋しまう＋ます" They mean "lose + get to + a little politeness"
Therefore, "I'll miss my bus home at 10 o'clock." is near correct^^

RRight. I was trying to make なくなる out of ない + なる, and actually forgot to look up なくなる in the dictionary! Well, in my dictionary it says, amongst other meanings "to be missing", "to be gone", which makes more sense to me. Then, "バスがなくなってしまいます" would be "bus being-gone end-up", or, in English, "I'll end up missing the bus". Seems reasonable?

Well, ない means non-existence, and なくなる means for something to become non-existent, so it's like "the buses will all become non-existent," or "there won't be any buses." I think it's fine to think about it as ない+なる. That's how I think of it, anyway.

Incidentally, I found it interesting that there's an entry for 無くなる in the dictionary. I'd thought that only 亡くなる (to die) would be in there. It says that it's the same origin as 無くなる (makes sense, but it still doesn't seem like there needs to be an entry for 無くなる).

If the meanings are completely unique and non-interchangeable to these two kanji as in "get lost/disasppear" and "die" it does seem appropriate to have separate entries, no ?

バスがなくなる = There won't be any bus service or The buses aren't available/running

もう、おそくなりましたし、うちの近くは、１０時ごろ 、バスがなくなってしまいますので。

Any chance you could you put the whole thing into English for me, please?

Although I have to admit, I still feel weird about the うちの近くは、１０時ごろ 、バスがなくなってしまいます phrasing. It seems like it should be marked as a destination, not a topic. I'm not a fan of using "around" twice in such close proximity in the translation either, but it's the closest I can think of that stays faithful to the structure of the original.

Thanks Glenn. I see I got the sense of もう、おそくなりましたし a bit wrong too, which is somewhat annoying.

If you see, right at the top of this thread, I had "I'm already running late...".

Oh, right. Yeah, he's talking about the time, not himself. I think that would have been もう、遅れていますし.

遅[おそ]くなった also has a meaning of 遅[おく]れた as in 遅くなってすいません. I think it would be really confusing for learners.

Yeah, I think おくれた has to be that the speaker had already missed the bus, not that they were soon going to be late.


ーーーはバスがなくなって as a topic/contrast sentence seems to be used for any place (or time) that the bus doesn't come.
