Hiya,

1. 一人の赤ちゃんが泣きだしたら、ほかの赤ちゃんまで泣きだしました。

Translation given: "When one baby started crying the others started crying too."

What exactly does まで mean in this sentence?


2. ふるさとにかえろかな

This is a line from a song (not sure if it's a real song or a made-up song). I tried to parse it as:

ふるさと + に + かえろ + か + な

Something about wondering if one will return home?

Is かえろ derived from 帰る? If so, what grammatical form is it?


3. うちは、朝、早い日がありますが、来られますか。

This is said by an interviewer to a job applicant. I'm guessing it means "We start early in the mornings; will you be able to get in OK?"

Is this correct?


4. それよりたくさんは、ちょっと、はらえません。

My translation: "We can't really pay much more than that."

Is this OK? I am not sure exactly what meaning たくさん and ちょっと produce in combination with はらえません.


5. 料理に味をつけるものにはいろいろあります。

Translation given: "There are various seasonings used in cooking."

What is the function of the second に?

The basic concept of まで is that it indicates the the boundary of a range both spatially and temporally, as in 外まで聞こえた or 朝まで起きていた. The example shows that the range of crying expands to other babies. (It sometimes has a nuance of "even".)

Yes. It's the shortened version of the volitional form 帰ろう.

ちょっと modifies 払えません.

I think に idicates a area/range here, i.e., 料理に味をつけるもの is considered as a set(in mathematical meaning).

I've seen quite a few Japanese verb conjugation tables, but I don't recall ever seeing this shortened version mentioned. Is it special-use only -- like poetic or old-fashioned or something?

It's more likely phonetically faithful than poetic or old-fashioned. The volitional form is sometimes pronounced as a short vowel or sokuon-euphonic change, as in あっち行こ（あっち行こう）, やめよっかな（やめようかな）or like that.

I see things like that alot in spoken japanese. Just like in english, the spoken language often affects the written one.

If you read lots of text intended to represent spoken language, youll find even more such things. さよなら is a common short form for さようなら, 言う becomes つう. I also run into uses of た in spoken form, such as in 何つったて, that seems to add a subtext of "たとえ" to the phrase.

i highly recommend taking these in stride, and just plowing through as mush as you can stomach

Just a tiny correction

何つったって＝なんていったって/なんといったって

つう is the contraction of ていう/という, and not just いう. The consonant "t" in "tsu" is from these "te" or "to". なに言ってる never change to なにつってる.
