i know what it means, but i've seen ほうが behind verbs (日本語を勉強するほうが欲しいです) and のほうが behind nouns (鳥のほうが欲しいです). what about adjectives(like 'i like (it) hot')?

what's the difference between ほうが and もっと, other than the 'a bit more' part?

is there any difference between しか and だけ, other than しか can only be used in negative sentence and vice versa? so do they ultimately mean the same thing? like is これだけですか the same as これしかじゃありませんか?

also, can anyone give the kanji for these particles:
たとえば (for example)
ほうが(more~)
もっと(a bit more)
より(compared to~)
より(from ~ on)
けど(but)
のに(despite, but)
ので(but)

I think that is the only one that has kanji that you would use.
all others are normally used in hiragana.

（noun)しか gives the impression that there is nothing but (noun)
私はあなたしかがいません。 There is no one else for me but you.
There is no one else at all I want, only you.

だけ is simply just or only.
この洋服だけのほうがいいと思います。 Just these clothes are best I think.
Maybe there are other choices but I choose these clothes.

You mean like:
温かい（あたたかい）ほうが好き（すき）です - I prefer (it) hot

Oh and by the way, what do you mean with 「日本語を勉強するほうが欲しいです」？ If you meant to say "I prefer to study Japanese", then it should be 「日本語の勉強のほうが好き（すき）です」

もっと means "more" indeed:
私（わたし）は彼（かれ）のほうが好き（すき）です - I like him better, I prefer him
私（わたし）は彼（かれ）のほうがもっと好き（すき）です - I like him much better, I prefer him a lot (that's bad English, but I hope you get the point.. )

もっと as a stand-alone word just means "more" I think..

Hm.. That's a tough one! I use the correct form intuitively, but I can't really point out the logic behind it, sorry.. (Again, I'm not exactly what you mean with 「これしかじゃありませんか」.. It sounds a bit un-natural)

ほうが can be written as 方が.
Beware with もっと that もっとも (which means "most") can be written as 最も, but もっと alone cannot. It's basically a different word, but it confused me at first anyway.
I couldn't find any Kanji for the other ones..

Thanks Damicci, that's what I meant actually! もっと is a "comparative" isn't it? (In the same category as "superlative" etc.?)

One note though, I'd express "can't you drive faster?" as 「もっと早く運転できませんか？」. Your sentence is correct, but sounds more like a suggestion: "How about doing some faster driving?".

In the case of more ほうが I believe is the Superlative or comparitive.
もっと is possibly more for amounts of something with out comparisson or preference over other nouns.

I haven't read the other posts in the thread after just getting back, so sorry for any repetition but the meaning is without の is like "it is better or preferable if" the action is taken in a certain direction. の is grammatical after a noun such as the phrase 勉強のほうが集中できます, not in front of より however, if you do leave out the する part.

But after an infinitive form of the verb, to me including の, and this may be totally off cause I've never seen this precise phrasing, reads like "I (the reader) can concentrate better on 図書館で勉強する as a phrase than 家で勉強するより. Very funny.

運転する is just to drive a vehicle. It can be used to operate a machine or big plant, too.
ドライブする is to drive in a car for leisure, fun. Its meaning is narrower than 運転する.

What is a pair verb or adjective ? :? The distinction between 働く and 仕事する I understand but is a little complicated to explain.... 新しい is basically the same only less formal than 新た。新た is used a lot on the news.

@Elizabeth san is right about the connotation of 誰が答えられますか, which is translated "who can answer!"
If you meant "anyone", then 誰か答えられますか would be better, yet as Japanese it does not sound really natural.
誰が and 誰か looks very similar, むずかしいですね。

You can also say
誰か答えてくれませんか。
どなたか答えてくださいませんか。 (politer)

よろしくお願いします。
If it is not enough in counting wise, you can use politer one;
よろしくお願いいたします。
どうぞよろしくお願いいたします。

Each pair have almost the same meaning. Not significant difference in meaning between the two words.
And I cannot tell "why". Most likely the latter ones (kanji compound) were originally imported from China along with kanji.

We don't say 水泳する by the way.
