1. その日、八月の末で、ずいぶん暑い日でした。
That day was towards the end of august and it was quite hot.
a, Is the で here sort of the teform of desu?
b, When 日 means day, and is not accompanied by a counter or so, is it always
pronounced hi?

2. 大学から十分ぐらい歩いて、ケラーさんのアパートに着きました。
After walking for about 10 minutes from the university (he) arrived at
kera-s(can't figure out the english name ^^ Kara? is that a name?) apartment.
Here the teform is just linking the to sentences right? Sort of meaning
first a then b.

3. ところが、ケラーさんは「オーケー」と言っただけで、すぐ山下君のお父さんのこと
をいろいろと聞きはじめました。
However, kera- just said "ok" and started asking various questions about yamashitas father.
This is more a question if it's correct? いろいろと is an adjective in here right and で is
the teform of です?

4.山下君はその日、アメリカでは、「ノー」は「ノー」なのだ、ということを知ったのです。
That day, yamashita got to know that in america, "no" means "no".
a, The なのだ is that the explanatory の?
b, In this case, ということ means the same as 意味, right? Perhaps if だ is removed
ということ can be replaced with 意味?

1) a) b)
Yes.

2)
Probably "Keller" from "Helen Keller", and yes, that's correct for 歩いて.

3)
Grammatically, いろいろと is an adverbial phrase, but your translation is correct.

4) a)
Yes.

b)
It's more close to 事実; "the fact that~".

3. Is it an adverbial phrase because iroiro needs to be an adverb?

4.b. How would you translate that sentence?

3)
That's because いろいろと modifies 聞きはじめました.

4) b)
Yamashita got to know the fact that "no" means "no" in America.
