Hello.

Well, I have heard そうですか、そうです、and a couple other things. I'm pretty sure they mean "I see" or something. Well, to be sure, can someone explain the different kinds of そう phrases. Like, what they mean, how I can use them... and whatever you could think of!

As I understand it there are tons of meaning for そう です か。

そう means "priest", or "to feel pain", or "seeming", between many more so I think you can make an idea of what it means where you heard it.

For those it inconveniences, my language bar is royally screwed up again, so please deal with my romaji.

Here's some brief info.

sou desu ka - roughly translates to 'is that so.' Without the question particle or question intonation,
sou desu - can almost mean like, 'right' (as in correct) or 'it's that'

And then the special polite form you don't really hear too often is
sayou de gozaimasu

sou desu is also added to the end predicate of sentences to mean "I hear X" or "They say X" such as:

sugu attakaku naru sou desu
They say it will become warm soon

so "sou desu" = "sayou de gozaimasu" ?
is it like this:
anata wa gakusei desu ka?
hai, sayou de gozaimasu

am i right??

That is wayyy too polite a response to "are you a student?" It is quite possible that you will never need to use that form of the phrase (or ever need to use "de gozaimasu" at all).

Just stick with "hai, sou desu."
