Greetings! Here is a WWII Japanese IJA Han -gou Rice Cooker (mess kit) that I have collected. The lid has two kanji, which are unfortunately weathered; perhaps illegible. Please take a look and see what you think. Sorry if I have them posted in the wrong direction. Thank you in advance!

昭 八 might mean the 8th year of Showa Era which is 1933

長岡 = Nagaoka. Either the name of a place or a family name.

These are guesses.

Hey, I will accept guesses! According to Wiki, Nagaoka "is a city located in the central part of Niigata Prefecture, Japan." So, this probably indicates the city of manufacture, or the name of a manufacturing concern in that region. Very nice to know the date of manufacure, too. Thank you!

It is highly unlikely that an item made under military contract would have either the name of the maker or the location of their factory emblazoned on it like that.

More likely belonged to a guy with the family name of Nagaoka,

Of course; I misunderstood. For some reason I thought mesolithic was still talking about the info engraved in the inside of the lid, after he mentioned the Showa date.
