In a move likely to change the appearance of its annual commemorations, the controversial Yasukuni Shrine (靖国神社) in Tokyo has announced a ban on military uniforms and cosplay within its grounds. In a notice issued on 7 August, the shrine said visitors would no longer be allowed to enter the precincts wearing "cosplay costumes" or "military attire", including military uniforms and tactical gear.

The shrine said the restrictions were intended to maintain tranquillity and dignity within the sacred grounds where the spirits of Japan's war dead are enshrined.
