Katanukiya offers masterpieces of Japanese art to eat

Hokusai's famous Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji series — best known for "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" — has found its way onto nearly everything, from guitars to clothing. Among the many food-themed tributes, the most striking might be the Little Views of Mount Fuji desserts by Katanukiya. These pastries are made with flat-baked Baumkuchen, created by layering and baking thin sheets of batter one by one, rather than using the traditional rotating spit. Katanukiya adds perforations that allow each piece to be folded slightly, giving the design a three-dimensional look.


Each cake is topped with a smooth layer of sponge made from egg whites, which serves as a clean surface for high-resolution food printing. This method preserves Hokusai's delicate colour gradations and fine detail. The cakes feature scenes such as The Great Wave off Kanagawa, Fine Wind, Clear Morning, and Fujimigahara Field in Owari Province, and are priced at 594 yen each or 1,782 yen for a set.

Katanukiya also offers macarons printed with eight of Hokusai's landscapes, including Thunderstorm Beneath the Summit and Kajikazawa in Kai Province, available as a complete set for 1,926 yen. Though currently sold only at the brand's Shibuya and Ginza shops in Tokyo, Katanukiya plans to open pop-up locations elsewhere — a small but delightful way to taste a piece of Japan's artistic heritage.
