Utagawa Hiroshige (歌川広重, 1797–1858), Tonegawa Barabara Matsu (利根川ばらばらまつ, "Scattered Pines on the Tone River"), from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (名所江戸百景), colour woodblock print, 1856–1857. The print portrays a busy stretch of the Tone River, one of the principal transport arteries supplying Edo. Hiroshige's striking composition is dominated by the sail of a passing cargo boat, which frames rather than reveals the surrounding landscape of reed beds, fishing boats and scattered riverside pines, demonstrating the innovative viewpoints that made the series one of the masterpieces of Japanese landscape printmaking.
