This elegant kachō-e (花鳥絵, "bird-and-flower picture") depicts two small green birds swooping among flowering hydrangeas (紫陽花 ajisai), a plant closely associated with Japan's rainy season (梅雨 tsuyu) and early summer. Hiroshige captures the birds in mid-flight, their dynamic movement contrasting with the stillness of the delicate blossoms. The asymmetrical composition, extensive use of space and subtle colour gradations are characteristic of Hiroshige's refined bird-and-flower prints, which combined close observation of nature with poetic evocations of the changing seasons. During the Edo period, such prints were prized by urban audiences for their blend of artistic sophistication, seasonal imagery and literary associations.
