Formal Robes of the Ii Family (井伊家伝来衣装) - Edo period
These robes are examples of the clothing worn by members of the Ii family, hereditary lords of Hikone Domain. The garment on the left is decorated with an all-over geometric pattern, while the robe on the right features waterfowl swimming among stylised streams. Such garments combined fine craftsmanship with auspicious and seasonal motifs, reflecting the status and aesthetic tastes of the Edo-period warrior elite.
