The armour is traditionally said to have been worn by Ii Naozumi (井伊直済), a son of Ii Naonaka (井伊直中, 1794–1850), the eleventh lord of Hikone Domain. During the middle and late Edo period, armour inspired by medieval styles became fashionable among the warrior class. This suit is an example of such a revivalist trend (fukkochō, 復古調), deliberately imitating the appearance of earlier armour. The helmet is a sixty-two-plate suji-bachi kabuto (六十二間筋兜), finished with white silk lacing (shiro-ito odoshi, 白糸威). Because Naozumi did not succeed to the position of domain lord, the helmet differs from those worn by the ruling heads of the Ii family and lacks some of the distinctive insignia associated with the lordly line.
