Notice that the explanation #1 you quoted is 助数詞 "counter", as in 花嫁衣裳一揃い(ひとそろい) in the example in the dictionary. Actually, 揃い in 紅白揃い is a noun in your example sentence, not suffix, and rendaku can be occurred also on this usage. See the examples in the dictionaries quoted below. 全巻揃い can be pronounced as ぜんかんぞろい even as a noun in the same meaning as 紅白揃い.
However, 紅白揃い is only read as こうはくそろい in your example sentence, and こうはくぞろい would only mean そればかり in another context. And, confusingly enough, 傑作揃い or 秀才揃い can be そろい even for the meaning そればかり.
In conclusion, it can be said that ぞろい is often used as そればかり, but exceptions exist. The context is the key after all, as always.
Thanks for pointing that out. I didn't really pay attention and thought i was pasting another example. Wasn't aware of 揃い as a 助数詞 either, so it is a helpful new information to me.
Dictionaries usually don't mention whether rendaku occurs or not for nouns.
e.g. ころし【殺し】の意味
1 殺すこと。また、転じて、その魅力などで、相手をひきつけ、悩ませること。「人殺し」「女殺し」 殺し(ころし)の意味 - goo国語辞書
(The readings are ひとごろし and おんなごろし.)
As in the explanation in Wikiedia quoted below, it would be hard to explain why 神帰り is かみかえり but 朝帰り is あさがえり. Incidentally, 行き帰り is いきかえり since this is a dvandva compound as same as 好き嫌い "すききらい", 生き死に "いきしに" or 飲み食い "のみくい" (cf. 女嫌い "おんなぎらい", 犬死に "いぬじに", 踊り食い "おどりぐい").
連濁はどの複合語にも必ず起きるわけではなく、さまざまな条件によって阻止される。しかし、どの条件にも例外があり、また条件を満たしていても連濁の起きていない語も多い。そのため、少なくとも現代語では、連濁が起こるかどうかは完全に予測できるものではない。 連濁 - Wikipedia
. I guess the only way with nouns is just to pronounce them as i please (i tend to use rendaku) until someone corrects me. Thank you for your efforts, Toritoribe.
