MEXT Scholarship (Research/Graduate students) 2018

Just received an email: I've been recommended! I'm speechless! It doesn't feel real... now to hurry up and get my health assessment done and get the LoAs... I don't know where to start, my hands are shaking!

Also, I am curious.. My main option is Hiroshima University. For which program did you apply?

Hi everyone!
I hope someone can help me out with this, would be really helpful.

I applied to MEXT research student last year but failed, but this time I have applied for the second time with different research topic, and I am heading soon to the embassy for an interview. I am pretty sure they will ask me why did I change my topic. To be honest, I've changed the topic because the first one became less interesting to me after I found the another one during my work at research institute. I am not sure if I can say that to the interview panel:) Any advice on how to handle this question?

^ I myself I'm desperately trying to prepare for the interview so maybe I'm not the best person to give you a reply but what if instead of saying that you lost interest in the previous one, you say you thought the new one was more relevant (for example)? I remember that the first time I wanted to apply for this scholarship the research project that I had was on patients and even though I design it so I wouldn't interact with them the universities didn't like it and at the end I didn't applied that year, so I came out with a new research project and got the ok from 3 universities but I didn't get the scholarship, and now I'm applying with the same research project hoping this time I will get it, hope that helps

The "more on Q & A" refers to Q & A during my interview session on my proposed research :)

Yeah, I thought in same way. I really think that new research has more benefits compared to the old one.

Hello my friend. I'm so happy to hear that you'll have your interviews next week. Basically, most of the questions will focus on your purpose of studying in Japan, the benefits that both countries (your home country and Japan) will have from your research, and more about your field of study. Always be true to yourself but make sure you're selling yourself in a positive way and answer their questions confidently with humility. Hope this helps. :) @SayuKami21

Thank you so much! I have tried getting in touch with professors, but they would not continue conversations until I was cleared for MEXT. I am so nervous about LOAs and this all falling through... what are the odds of not passing second screening?

As long as you have one LOA , you will be fine. I think the second screening is just document checking stuff by the Japanese government. (Read this on some blog somewhere)

Out of the applicants last year almost everyone with an LOA passed the second screening. Only one candidate was rejected. So, your chances of passing are pretty high. (I recommend getting atleast 2 LOA's, preferably one from a public/national uni because they are preferred over the private ones)

My school preference is Waseda, Todai, and Nagoya. I have contacted the professors now, except for Waseda. The last time I tried, I was forwarded to the admissions office and told that I did not need to contact them - only to send for the letter if selected. Thinking I should leave that one alone and send for the letter the way they instruct me to.

Yes, follow what the university tells you to do. The procedure differs from uni to uni, its a pain xD
 
Is age a huge factor in this scholarship? I see on the guidelines that you must be 22 years or older but I'll still be 19 by April 2018, 20 by time of departure (September).

My friend got rejected because she was 19 when she applied. Not sure if they apply this rule strictly in every country.
I recommend contacting the consulate/embassy in your country about this.

It seemed like it wasn't an issue because I got pass the application stage and was invited to an interview.
 
Hello! I just had the interview! they told me that I was very likely to get selected, but they didn't told me when would they give the results, so around how long did it take for your embassy to contact you? I'm so anxious!
