Posted here asking for recommendations for cheap hotels a little more than a year ago and never updated everyone on how that turned out. That was because at the time I did not end up going to Japan. I started putting money into other things about that time. Next month though I will be going to Japan for a full month. I have a few ideas for activities and places to visit. Himeji Castle, Kiyo Mizu Dera, the Nara Japanese deer park etc. Just wanted to get the news I was going out and looking for some suggestions on other things to do. I'll be purchasing a JR pass too so any where near the JR rail system is a good suggestion. Also I plan to visit a friend in Nagasaki and one in Chiba at least once during my trip so places near those might not need to be suggested as they might have some ideas once I get there but feel free to mention places near there as well.

The question is a little vague, but what are you interested in? You could spend weeks in a single spot, or travel the country. I certainly have my favourite places, and some I want to get to when time and touring allows, plus in some cases it is the journey that is the important point, not just the destination.

I guess it is a bit vague. I am interested in a lot of different things. I like anime/manga, old Japanese history, but also sightseeing. I am going to be in Nagasaki, Osaka and Chiba for sure. So maybe activities and places to see near those places would be preferable.

The first two are easy to please, but "sightseeing" can be for anything. We'll just have to take a wild guess that any tourist sights are acceptable.

Look up manga museum to see where they are. Also, hang out in Harajuku, Tokyo to see cosplayers in anime outfits. As for history, the further south you go, the more you'll see, but start with temples, shrines, forts, and museums. Do a Google search for events or festivals that time of year, too, and use the dates to plan a skeleton of a trip.

Sightseeing: the places you mentioned in Kyoto, Tokyo's Imperial Palace, Hiroshima's A-bomb dome and museum, Shikoku's Naruto whirlpool, Mt. Fuji (from a tourist ship on Lake Ashi, perhaps), a washi museum near Kochi, Shikoku, ninja castle and museum in Iga-Ueno not far from Nara, etc.

This helps quite a bit. I know my request is a bit vague I think mostly I just wanted some opinions of good places to go from people that have been. If you look up sightseeing etc you always end up finding ads for certain places that make them seem wonderful and then they don't live up to expectations. Asking here I'll feel I get less of a biased since it's personally based.

I was already planning on going to Nara Park. Seeing that Todai-ji is right next to it I'll certainly go.

I wanted to once again say thanks for all the help from everyone here. I'm now a little more than a week out from my trip and I feel this has really helped me come up with places/things to see. I'll make sure to come back to the forum either in this thread or another to let everyone know how much fun I had.
