Can't make out kanji

I'm making my way through a fictional "report", but because of the tiny writing and/ or not having been acquainted with the kanji before, there's some I can't make out (and it's too small to clearly see the radicals)...

What's the kanji after "悲しみに(_)"?
I'm also not sure I've read these right, because I get no results when I search for them (in bold):
に包まれ清んだ(顔)
嘆き虚ろと化してしまった

With 清む, is it as in "the gentleness [etc.] in her expression was clear"? I looked it up and 清 doesn't seem to be used much this way.

The kanji is correct, but it's 嘆きの虚ろと化してしまった. This makes sense.

It means her expression was clear / unclouded / untarnished, with being enveloped in gentleness and affection, not "gentleness [etc.] was clear".

Ah! Sorry, I forgot to put the の in - though, nothing still came up when I put the whole phrase in, so I was a bit doubtful. Especially after I made a mistake with 刺 and 剌... I wanted to make sure!

That wasn't my attempt at the entire translation, just what "清んだ meant in relation to 顔. So it would be "a clear expression that's enveloped in [...]."

Speaking strictly, 優しさと慈しみに包まれ（＝ 優しさと慈しみに包まれて） explains her state, not just her expression. Notice that it's not 彼女は優しさと慈しみに包まれた清んだ顔をしていた. That sentence is from 彼女は優しさと慈しみに包まれていた + 彼女は清んだ顔をしていた.

If it were that (just describing her expression) wouldn't it be 包まれて清んだ顔をしていた?

Is there a difference between using a -masu stem of a verb and the -te form in sentences like this? I would have thought because it's the -masu stem it would also be describing 顔.

彼女は優しさと慈しみに包まれた清んだ顔をしていた is used for that meaning, as I wrote in my previous post. 優しさと慈しみに包まれた modifies 顔 here.

The meaning is the same. The -te form sometimes has a colloquial nuance.
