A little help with this grammar "construction"

Hello there~

Lately I've been practicing text reading and grammar in order to improve my writing and comprehension skills for the JLPT level 3.

A few days ago a ran into this "strange grammar construction" in a famous japanese comic book~

"サッカーボール を 友達に、日本がワールドカップで優勝する日を夢みる 少年 ~ 翼"

In my mind this sentence sounds like:

"The young Tsubasa dreams of the day Japan will win the world cup "

but the "サッカーボール を 友達に" seems out of place, i can't even find a proper translation to it, maybe I studied too much kanjis or maybe this is advanced grammar, but i can't seem to find this grammar construction anywhere else,


any help is appreciated, thank you for reading~

BTW, that's not a sentence but a phrase, i.e., not "A young boy Tsubasa dreams of the day ~" but "Tsubasa; A young boy who dreams of the day ~".

Its more of an "implicit" shite, i guess the ausence of an auxiliary verb was making me unable to comprehend why there was a "wo" in there

considering that "being friend with soccer" would be something around the lines of "being a soccer fan" (sakkaa ga suki na hito ???)

Is it possible to rewrite the phrase this way?

サッカーファン の ため に、少年 翼 は 日本がワールドカップで優勝する日を
夢みていた

Or in english:

"Tsubasa, a young boy who dreams of the day japan will win the world cup ,(for all) the soccer fans ( in japan)"

No. He wants to be friends with balls, not soccer as a game. (Haven't you heard Tsubasa's words ボールは友達 "The ball is my friend"?)

Yeah,that's right. "Being friends with the soccer ball" might be more appropriate, though.
