Momotakeshi, I think I know someone from there.
By the way when will you find out where you will stay?
Are you a scholar through embassy recommendation?
We want to contact more scholars. There might be things you need here that we can assist you with.
Don't hesitate to ask us anything. :)

I still haven't received any information from my university regarding the dorm. I think they will be sending the details around July. I am still waiting for it before I decide where to stay, but I found out from waseda's website that their dorms are quite expensive. Yes, I got the scholarship through embassy recommendation. I will greatly appreciate if you could introduce me to other Filipino scholars in waseda. thank you so much. :)

WOw awesome! And did you apply through university nomination? Because right now I'm waiting for my result, but it looks like you're already admitted. So you must have applied through a different process..?

No, I applied directly to the embassy so I got the scholarship through embassy recommendation.

ohh i thought that might be the case. going through university nomination is so nerve-racking. such long waiting periods, waiting for them to notify me of success or failure! i'll hold off on asking you any questions until i know if i'm going though!

okay, update us regarding your results. good luck! :D

I shall! only about 2.5 weeks until I find out I think.

I will ask you one thing. What is your main focus of study, or what was your research topic that you submitted in your application process?

Applications are not yet opened in my country but I have just finished writing my research proposal >_<
You think it would be a good idea to get a local teacher to give it a reading? I'm not too sure about it because he is not a Master Program teacher, but a bachelors one.

And another question...
The people who are writing the recommendation letters for me... they don't speak English, at least not fluently...
Am I supposed to attach the letters in Spanish? Since they are to be placen in a closed envelope and signed across the seal I don't know what I should do >_<

Sanos,

This is straight from the application guide for applying for MEXT through Waseda University, so I cannot say that this is correct for you since you are applying through the embassy it seems. But, here is what it says:

"For the applicant evaluation forms and all required certifications, please complete them in Japanese or English.
Otherwise, certified translation must accompany."

I hope this helps. But you may want to contact the people through whom you're applying i order to get the most correct answer.

Thanks a lot Axion.

I might as well just wait until the 17th for the embassy to open applications here and ask them directly. I'm guessing this might be a common issue with my country's recommendation letters >_<

Well everyone, I got rejected.
But, the world is not over. I just am super curious why I was rejected. And I also wonder how many people applied.

I also opted not to be considered as a regular applicant because I didn't want them to look at my application and think, well he doesn't need the money, because I most certainly do.
So I have asked them to reconsider mine as a regular application, though I'd need ideas for financing other than MEXT, like other scholarships or even loans, though loans would be rough. I think they'll probably say no though.

But so does anyone know any other ideas for Graduate schools in Tokyo providing classes in English, over East Asian studies, like economic policy, economic integration, things like that?

And has anyone ever had experience with a school designating someone as a "backup" or "alternate" nominee? I guess it doesn't hurt to ask Waseda, but again they'll most likely say no.

Man, GSAPS was really a dream situation. Exactly what I want to study (that is, East Asian economic integration). I don't want to believe that I didn't get it. But that's life!

the focus of my study is public policy, i want to study Japan's policy making process. How about you?

Hello Axion,

im really sad to hear your news. i honestly don't know what to say, but you're right the world is not yet over. i think waseda has other scholarships available for privately-financed students, though i don't know the exact details, but i am sure there are alternative ways to get into waseda. the university really doesn't disclose reasons for rejection. I also applied for the University of Tokyo, but they also rejected me without stating why. Don't lose hope, I think you can figure out something. Start by asking waseda on how they can assist you in finding other ways for financing. good luck! :)

P.S.
Just to clarify, did they reject only your request for scholarship but could still enter waseda through alternative forms of financing? or did they reject you from entering the program itself?

Well it's tricky, but basically I chose an option that said I only want to apply if I can get the scholarship. I did this because if I said like "yes, consider me even if I can't get the scholarship," I thought maybe they would think that I don't need the scholarship. But I definitely need some kind of financial help. Anyway see what I mean? Now I don't know if they will let me basically change my decision. I asked, but am waiting for a response.
Anyway thanks for the support. I will keep trying, possibly through the embassy nomination. I really wish you luck though at GSAPS. I wish so much I could join! Your topic sounds interesting, so I hope you make the best of it! :)

Oh I see, now I get the picture. Yes, the situation's kinda tricky. I hope you get to find a way to make it to waseda. Just keep on updating us. thanks so much! i'll do my best to make the most out of my stay in GSAPS. I am still hoping you could also make it this September. :)

Thanks a lot! I think you may have given me some luck :)
Because Waseda told me that I'll be accepted into the regular applicant pool. So I'll find out by May 24 if I'm accepted. This time I'm not gonna count on it though, and I'll make a Plan B and Plan C and Plan D.
I guess financing will be difficult and expensive, but I'll worry about that later. Thanks again!

I have a question regarding the documents: :-)

I've finished gathering everything, and I'm ready to send the document off to the embassy but I have two questions.

1. In the Study Application Form where I've typed out my study plan, is it ok if the font that I used is different from theirs? Their font is 7.5 MonoCrome-something-something, and it is TINY! Like seriously my eyes hurt just from looking at it. So I used Times New Roman 10. Is this ok?

2. Should I staple individual documents together, or is it enough to just have page numbers at the bottom? I was doing a little bit of research about it online, and I noticed that some places say you should staple them, and some say you shouldn't. Unfortunately my embassy isn't as detailed in their instructions so I'm not really sure what to do..

I don't think typography really matters as long as you dont go breaking the format with oversized letters.

Regarding point 2, I read somewhere (I don't remember if it's in the application format or somewhere else) that the documents shouldn't have any king of holes in them.
I would recommend using "page separators"? I don't know what they are called in English, but here, a link to the image :P

And put the numbers in the separatos, not the documentation itself.

Hope it helps.

Thank you soooo much for the reply! 🙂

About 1, I won't change their font, just the part that regards my thesis, I won't touch their questions. I figured this would be OK to do since there is also an option to write everything out by hand.

About 2, GENIUS IDEA! Why didn't I ever think of that! I'm going out tomorrow to get those separators ASAP that is excellent! I know they have ones that don't actually stick to a page, so I'm gonna go ahead and get those ones.

Thank you once again for the lovely answer! 👍

Hi everyone!

I am putting together my application for undergrad as we speak. I already posted this in the MEXT 2014 forum but maybe you guys can help me here also?

If I am to graduate on June 9, and the application is due June 7, what do I write for 'Present Status at school attending?' Do I write 'enrolled', 'graduated', or possibly 'about to graduate'?

How detailed should my 'field of study and reasons' and answers to the questions on the application sheet be? Are they looking for long, detailed and well composed paragraphs or concise short sentences?

Also, another dumb question, but I was never actually clear on it: do ALL applicants take the exams, or do you have to qualify to take exams based on your application?

Any information you have would help! Thank you so much!

I called the embassy of my country with this question and the lady on the phone told me that the paper format cannot be changed and I even cant add some space for my reasins of chosing particular major! This was the hardest part of the application because all I did was trying to put all my thoughts in this tiny space. Finally I submitted my application ans hope I will pass the application process and get to try to pass math and english.

Do you know how many people get the scholarship for undergraduate from your country? From Turkmenistan there is only one candidate, ni matter how many people participate. I think that this is not ok.

i got a message from my university that i should arrive there not later than September 10. I hope to hear the details of my departure from the embassy soon. :)

Hello, momotakeshi! Isn't that too early? My professor's assistant is taking care of my ticket and he emailed me last week that I should pick departure date from Sept 25 to Oct 8. I chose Sept 29. They had also arranged my dorm. Are we to attend the orientation again?

What is your school? I got MEXT scholarship from GSAPS - Waseda and have to arrive Tokyo on 9th Sept (while the orientation week is from 24th or st). Ticket is arranged, now just wait for document sent to Embassy and apply for the visa.
