盂蘭盆（うらぼん） - translation help needed !

Within the following sentence there's an embedded sentence (shown in bold font) which I can't figure out:

目連が地獄にいる母の苦しみを救うため，釈尊に教えられて盂蘭盆会を行なったとする盂蘭盆経は ，中国成立であるため原語を誤解し，様々な果食を供える盆器そのものを〈盂蘭盆〉と呼ぶの だと考えたようである．

Somebody give me a hint please.

The core of the sentence is (subject は)誤解し、考えたようである.
" 目連が地獄にいる母の苦しみを救うため、釈尊に教えられて盂蘭盆会を行なったとする" modifies 盂蘭盆経, and 盂蘭盆経 is the subject of 中国成立である.

As I read it in 法華経大全 :

日蓮は「仏説盂蘭盆経」で有名。その母が死後に餓鬼道に堕ちて苦しんでいるのを知り、釈尊の教えによって法会を行かない、母を餓鬼道から救ったという。それがお盆の行事(盂蘭盆会)の由来とされている。

So which was it? 地獄 or 餓鬼道 ?

In this case, 地獄 would be used as 三悪趣 or like that, and doesn't refer to 地獄道, i.e., one of 六道.

I understand the 地獄道 / 餓鬼道 point, but I just needed some help with the translation of the text.

Thanks very much. Attempting to learn about Buddhism lately is resulting in a lot of new vocabulary items (including many "redundant" terms) and concepts.

I don't know what the OP is reading, but in all the materials I have been reading they are careful to include the 原語. I usually skip right over it because there is no way I'm going to deal with all those Sanskrit terms. Avoiding the Sanskrit terms is part of the reason I'm reading the things in Japanese instead of English. With a ton of various 仏 and 如来 and 菩薩 populating the 法華経 I know I'd never be able to keep them straight without the help of seeing their names in kanji. It is so much to deal with that for the first time in my life I'm actually using a highlight pen in a book. I actually drained one with about 50 pages left to go in the book.

I know a man about 85 years old who says he has been studying the 法華経 for fifty years. If he is working from an unabridged classical Japanese version, I can see how it would take fifty years.

盂蘭盆（うらぼん）
盂蘭盆経に出る語。＜盆＞＜お盆＞と略称する。『玄応 音義』は、正しくは＜烏藍婆拏（うらんばな）＞であり、＜倒懸（とうけん）＞と訳し 、逆さ吊りの意であって地獄での苦しみを意味するとし 、これが通説となってきた。

＜烏藍婆拏＞や＜盂蘭盆＞の原語については、倒懸を意味するサン スクリットの俗語形ullambana としたり、イラン系原語で魂を意味するurvan であるとするなど様々な説があるが、雨季の安居（あん ご）の最終日（満月15日、場合によっては14日）、つま り僧侶が他の僧たちに罪を指摘してもらって懺悔し、僧 団が最も清らかになる自恣（じし）pravarana の日に、亡き親などへの追善を願って僧侶たちに盆器に 盛った食事をさしあげるのが通例であったことから、pr avaranaがインド・西域などで変化した語、uravanaない しuravanaなどの音写と近年では推定されている。
