Hey all, I've been meaning to join up for a while to ask about the scholarship but have forgot until now. I had some questions that I was going to ask my Consulate-General but they're closed for Easter holidays so I was wondering if anyone here could help me with a particular one.
For the 'others' section in the subject selection, what is it exactly? Is it anything you'd like, e.g. Psychology or Animation or are there limits to it? I know that it's harder for them to find you a university if you choose an 'other' for your major but I'd like some insight to this.

Lemme know when you guys get the applications out in Lithuania, its seems abit unfair that people in non-english speaking countries in Europe have to fill out the application in English (or do they provide a translated copy?)

No, they give you a date when they process your application (usually in June/July)

I think it's possible to fill all documents in Lithuanian and attach English translation, but there are no problems about filling them in English for me. except health certificate, because I'm sure that my doctor doesn't know English.
The deadline for Canada applications are June 1st?

I don't know exactly, but I believe in others are everything that is not under humanities or natural sciences category, so you can choose any subject you want if you know that there are universities in Japan who has that major. but it may be less chance to get the scholarship if you choose subject from others.
For the first screening process they provide a translated copy. I think that after the interview, those who pass must provide an english translation for all the documents that have to be sent to Japan.

My best guess would be that it is a subject that falls under the chosen category (eg. Social Sciences and Humanities) that's not listed in the application, Psychology like you said would fall under this category. Does the recommendation have to be from the principal from your former school or can you ask a teacher? My school is rather large so I never really got the chance to get to know the principal well enough to ask for a recommendation.

That's what I want to know too! But I guess it's ok to ask recommendation from teacher. It's said that you have to get recommendation from principal or advisor, right? I have no idea what they mean by advisor so I guess it could be classteacher?
Here, they ask for a letter of recommendation from the last school you attended, they don't specify who.

Everywhere I check on the web people say that according to their embassy a recommendtion from a teacher is fine, but the recommendation must come from the last school you attended.
I plan on giving the consulate in Vancouver a call on Tuesday and I'll be sure to let you guys know what they say.
And is it correct that you have to attach the original transcript and diploma to the application...?
Also would you guys think attaching a letter of acceptance from a university from your country would be a plus/would they consider it as a plus?

I don't think you're required to have straight As in order to pass the first screening, I think they look for good grades in the fields that you choose, i.e. if you apply for engineering, them they want good grades in math, physics, etc.
@vanek: I attached a letter of acceptance from a university I passed here in Brazil when I applied last year, they din't say whether it helped or not, but I passed the first screening.

Ah I see, ill ask the embassy and post what they tell me. In brazil are all applicants allowed to take the exams? Or do they first look at your High School marks and then short-list you for the exams if your marks were good enough?
They short list you for the exam, and the result of the exam determines if you're going to be interviewed. How is it like in Canada?

that's the general timeline, from the wording it seems to say that everyone can take the exam and sit for the interview. But I'll double check with the embassy when they open tomorrow. I think it may be because the MEXT scholarship isn't too popular in Canada so they have the time to interview everyone who applies.
P.S. On some sites people say that the Japanese test is only there for reference and that they don't use it to decide acceptance; and other sites it says that the Japanese test is weighed more heavily? How is it in Brazil?

Grades doesn't matter that much. I had variety from A to C and passed through first screening.
As for recommendation last year I had it filled by principal but also attached a letter from my teacher. Also this year I am fresh at university so I called embassy and they told me that recommendation from teacher from my high school is good.
In Czech Rep. we had tests and only those with at least ... results got to interview. Well no one got there last year and embassy didn't tell us nothing except that we didn't score enough for following interview. Kind of rude, they didn't tell us the limit nor our scores :-(
As fro reasons I had only one option last year so I stretched it little bit over the field but I think you should just give the general idea that you know what you are doing and its not just some "why not" idea.

Hi ! I'm a first year faculty of medicine student in Turkey and i want to study medicine in Japan. But i think there arent a lot of guys who wants to study medicine in Japan (actually i didnt met anyone who wants...). Will it be harder to get the scholarship because of my major selection? And will the fact im already studying ( and won the entrance exams ) have a positive effect? I just couldnt find somebody who wants to study medicine in Japan and some people says ''Its madness why study medicine there go for an engineering program instead '' , is that really madness ? Please help me...

I think it's extremely hard to get scholarship for medicine studies. If I'm right, last year they didn't even give scholarships for medicine students. It's one of the most expensive subjects and Japan's economic situation is not very good. You could try to get the scholarship for medicine but there's really low possibility that you'll get it.

Mostly just online algebra tutorials, english looks like a walk in the park, and japanese... ehh im working on kana and kanji thats all I can do for now haha. What about you?
turns out the consulate here hasnt had an applicant selected for the scholarship in the past 5 years haha :nihonjin:
also- my consulate says that the Japanese test plays a bigger role for applicants applying for the Humanities and Social Sciences
