The creation of Soka Gakkai International(SGI) is a unque history of a common people's movement in the 20th century. Sōka Gakkai (窶蕨窶ーツソナ?w窶ーテッ?) ("Value-Creation Society") is the largest lay active Buddhist organization or any japan's cultural group today with more than 8 million households, derived from Nichiren Buddhism. It began with its first President, Tsunesaburo Makiguchi (1871-1944) a teacher by profession, who embraced Nichiren Daishonin(sect) Buddhism and later founded the Soka Kyoiku Gakkai (Value Creating Society) which later became the Soka Gakkai Organization. He was an educator, author and philosopher.

The Soka Kyoiku Gakkai (Value-Creating Education Society) originally comprised reform-minded educators who were dissatisfied with an education system that emphasized rote learning and the production of obedient subjects of the state. These teachers saw an effective alternative in Makiguchi's pedagogy which sought to develop independent thinking and critical judgment. The group's Buddhist emphasis steadily strengthened as it developed into a movement dedicated to the reform of society through the reformation of the inner life of individuals. By the early 1940s it had a membership of some 3,000 people, meeting regularly in members' homes.

Josei Toda like his mentor Tsunesaburo Makiguchi embraced Nichiren Daishonin Buddhism in 1928. He was an educator and entrepreneur. While in his early twenties he met his mentor while teaching in one the schools that Tsunesaburo Makiguchi was principal. He was inspired to Makiguchi's educational ideals and later became Makiguchi's protégé. Sharing a common bond with his mentor Makiguchi he shared the same fate of his mentor for by opposing Japan militarist movement to enter World War II was arrested and imprisoned.

Japan's militarist government was by now steadily tightening controls on thought and expression as part of the war effort. Makiguchi and Toda refused to bow to pressure from the state-controlled war machine and as a result, the meetings organized by the Soka Kyoiku Gakkai came under the surveillance of the Special Higher Police, responsible for the suppression of "thought crimes."

On July 6, 1943, Makiguchi and Toda were detained on suspicion of violation of the notorious Peace Preservation Law and accused of showing disrespect to the emperor. A total of 21 leaders of the organization were arrested. In prison, Makiguchi held fast to his beliefs, expounding the principles of Nichiren Buddhism to his interrogators. On November 18, 1944, Makiguchi died of malnutrition and the privations of his long imprisonment, a martyr to his convictions. He was 73.

Alone among the other leaders of the Soka Kyoiku Gakkai who had been arrested, Toda refused to recant. While in prison, he intensively studied the Lotus Sutra, considered in the Mahayana Buddhist tradition to express the essence of Shakyamuni's enlightenment, and chanted its title, Nam-myoho-renge-kyo--the practice that is the core of Nichiren Buddhism.

Through his highly focused practice, he gained two critical insights. One was that what is described in the sutras as "the Buddha" is nothing other than life itself. The other involved an awakening to his own profound mission as a bodhisattva, to share the teachings of Nichiren Buddhism widely in society to build the foundations for a peaceful world.

On July 3, 1945, Toda was released from prison. He immediately dedicated himself to continuing the work of his mentor Makiguchi, rebuilding the organization that had been effectively destroyed by the authorities.

Toda often spoke of the awakening he had experienced in prison, and this, together with the immovable confidence he had gained in the validity of Buddhism, was a driving force for the postwar development of the organization. He revived the traditional format of the small group discussion meeting, which remains at the heart of the movement's activities.

On May 3, 1951, Toda, who had been general director of the organization under Makiguchi, became its second president, announcing his determination to achieve a membership of 750,000 households. This marked the beginning of vigorous propagation activities in Japan, but Toda's determination went far beyond mere numerical expansion. He declared that his most cherished wish was to eliminate misery from the face of the Earth, with the practice of Nichiren Buddhism as the means to achieve this. In this, he sought to awaken people to the reality that our individual happiness is inextricably linked with the happiness of others and the welfare of society as a whole. This message had great appeal for the most disempowered strata of Japanese society, the common people who struggled with economic, physical and psychological distress in the wake of defeat.

In 1951, Toda began to publish the serialized novel Human Revolution. The title expresses his conviction in the transformative power of Nichiren Buddhism. The concept of "human revolution," or inner-motivated positive change, expresses the traditional Buddhist concept of enlightenment in terms accessible to people living in the modern-day world.

In December 1957, Toda realized his vow of achieving 750,000 member households. By 1957, Toda held a meeting before thousands of Soka Gakkai Youth declaring his outpouring and fervent message to work hard and dedicate SGI mission for the elimination of nuclear weapon. It becomes a fundamental movement that is based on the sacred tenents of Buddhism that sanctifies the sacredness and dignity of life. And that an act to massively destroy life into abyss is a dark and demonic nature against the very essence of our humanity and value of life itself. He laid the foundation for the next generation of SGI to carry for its movements of peace through culture and education and by the time of his death in 1958 the organization had become an proactive grass root organization for peace in Japan for over million people. On April 2, aged 58, Toda passed away peacefully.

On May 3, 1960, Daisaku Ikeda, Toda's disciple, became the third president. Within six months, he established chapters in the United States and South American countries, followed a year later by organizations in nine European countries. He continues to provide leadership for the global SGI organization, which now includes members in more than 190 countries and territories. Ikeda has founded a number of educational and cultural institutions that seek to foster the values of peace, culture and education.

Sōka Gakkai International (SGI), the umbrella organization, was founded in 1975 and characterizes its organization as both a support network for practitioners of Nichiren Buddhism and as a global movement for peace, education, and cultural exchange.
The SGI is based on the teachings and philosophy of Nichiren Buddhism, which places the highest emphasis on the sanctity of life. Members seek, through their practice of Buddhism, to develop the ability to live with confidence, to create value in any circumstance and to contribute to the well-being of friends, family and community.

Their philosophy is rooted in the concept of "human revolution," a process of inner transformation through Buddhist practice. They believe that it is a process that leads one to develop their character and to act not only for our personal fulfillment but also for the betterment of society. They believe that happiness is being able to experience profound joy that comes from never being defeated by any problem in life.

We'll, like any kind of organization there are guidelines that a certain group should follow or observe. SGI organization is not an exception. The organization is centered on discussion/study group meetings wherein members can freely interact on the basis of faith. This is some kind a therapeutic group. There are also divisions in the Soka Gakkai japan that members are active in social roles they are into such as in music, sports, health, cultural, educational and peace institutions including politics- New Komeito party which is an independent entity.

I think you misunderstood ASHIKAGA-san's question, he's asking what we (= JREF members) are supposed to discuss here (= in this thread)...

Nichiren you are coming very close to religious proselytizing for buddhism. I have warned othere members about this on islam and christianity. Do not think that you are immune to this. This thread is equivalent to someone putting up the information on the Mormon foundation. Now either make a point of debate or I will lock this thread as pointless.
You have a habit of pushing buddism on this forum rather than actual discussion.

This is a great link if you are looking at a group and wondering if it might be a cult: www.orange-papers.org

On the website, you can click on any of 100 traits/questions and read about it in more detail.

I know the excommunication by Soka Gakkai (Nichiren Shoshu's former lay organization) from the Nichiren priesthood and the resultant campaign of harassment against the priests was a turning point for many people. A dispute that has gotten so petty and nasty there is no way this isn't a cult...

"Denigration of competing sects, usually over some very minor point of doctrine." Witness SGI's contempt and disrespect for Nichiren Shoshu, and the other Nichiren sects.

All of my posts here are just providng information and i had never pointed my beliefs into self-righteousness. If i had been so critical with other views here, that is purely intellectual discussion. No more no less. 😌

Good, 'cause you people do require therapy. Well, probably not the sort you're receiving...

Have you seen the patterns formed by sand dunes? Depending on the size and shape of the sand grains, the direction of the winds and the surface features of the land, shifting sands can form myriad dune patterns. The scaly or wavy patterns are constantly changing. Just like those ever-shifting sand patterns, everything around us (ourselves included) is constantly changing. And like dunes of sand, how things or people change is a function of their relations with their surroundings. Changing our lives for the better is therefore always possible, and it is always up to us. The meaning of our lives and our happinessツ―arises through our interconnectedness with those around us, with the community and world in which we live. That is "Human revolution" so as to speak. 😊

I think you got misinformation. There might be a lot anti-SGI articles circulating on net which are untrue or fabricated stories. I suggest you do scholarly reasearch.

It was Nichiren Shoshu priesthood who excommunicated the Gakkai and harrassing its members. The Gakkai leaders wanted to make a dialogue with priesthood but they refused and continued do disband the organization. That was 19 years ago. Its not an issue to both group anymore as they are completely separate. Indeed, history tells it all.

I like to share this article from non-SGI people about their understanding on SGI. Link: Origins and Development

Soka Gakkai International

In 1960, Daisaku Ikeda, then 32 years old, became president of Soka Gakkai. In 1975 Ikeda expanded the organization into Soka Gakkai International (SGI), which today has affiliate organizations in 120 countries and an estimated global membership of 12 million.

In the 1970s and 1980s SGI grew rapidly in the West through aggressive recruitment. Patrick Duffy, who played Bobby Ewing on the popular 1980s television series Dallas, became a convert and spoke glowingly of SGI in many widely read interviews. SGI also drew attention through splashy publicity events. For example, according to Daniel Golden of the Boston Globe (October 15, 1989),

"NSA [Nichiren Shoshu of America, now known as SGI-USA] stole the show at Bush's inauguration in January by displaying on the Washington Mall the world's largest chair ツ― a 39-foot-high model of the chair that George Washington sat in as he presided over the Continental Congress. The Guinness Book of World Records has twice cited NSA for assembling the most American flags ever in a parade, although in one mention it misidentified the group as 'Nissan Shoshu,' confusing the religious organization with the automaker."

Is SGI a Cult?

SGI came to widespread public attention in the West during the 1970s and 1980s, a time of growing concern about cults. For example, it was in 1978 that 900 members of the Peoples Temple cult committed suicide in Guyana. SGI, a rapidly growing, sometimes flamboyant non-western religious organization, looked suspiciously like a cult to many people and to this day remains on some cult watch lists.

You can find diverse definitions of "cult," including "a religious group who adheres to major doctrines which are pointedly contradictory to orthodox Christianity." By this definition, all of Buddhism is a cult. A checklist created by Marcia Rudin, M.A., a founding director of the International Cult Education Program, seems more objective.

I have no personal experience with SGI, but over the years I've met many SGI members. They don't seem to me to fit the Rudin checklist. For example, SGI members are not isolated from the non-SGI world. They are not anti-woman, anti-child, or anti-family. They are not waiting for the Apocalypse. I do not believe they use deceptive tactics to recruit new members. Claims that SGI is bent on world domination are, I suspect, a tad exaggerated.

Break With Nichiren Shoshu

Soka Gakkai was not organized by Nichiren Shoshu, but after World War II Soka Gakkai and Nichiren Shoshu developed a mutually beneficial alliance. Over time, however, tensions grew between SGI President Ikeda and the Nichiren Shoshu priesthood over questions of doctrine and leadership. In 1991 Nichiren Shoshu formally renounced SGI and excommunicated Ikeda. News of the break with Nichiren Shoshu rippled like shock waves through the SGI membership.

However, according to Richard Hughes Seager in Buddhism in America (Columbia University Press, 2000), a majority of American members remained with SGI. Before the break they had had little direct contact with the Nichiren Shoshu priesthood; SGI-USA had always been run by laypersons, and that did not change. Many of the issues causing the rift made little sense outside Japan.

Further, Seager wrote, since the break with the priesthood SGI-USA has become more democratic and less hierarchical. New initiatives placed women in more leadership positions and enhanced SGI's racial diversity. SGI also has become less exclusionary. Seager continued,

"Religious dialogue, both interreligious and inter-Buddhist, is now on the SGI agenda, which would not have been the case under the sectarian leadership of the Nichiren Shoshu priesthood. All of these initiatives have contributed to an opening up of Soka Gakkai. A frequent statement in leadership circles is that a new, egalitarian SGI is a 'work in progress.'"

SGI-USA: After the Break

Before the break with Nichiren Shoshu, the then-named Nichiren Shoshu of America had only six regional temples in the U.S. Today there are more than 90 SGI-USA centers and more than 2,800 local discussion groups. Soka Gakkai has taken on the priestly functions of conducting weddings and funerals and conferring the Gohonzon, a sacred mandala that is enshrined in SGI centers and on members' home altars.

William Aiken, Director of Public Affairs for SGI-USA, said that since the split, SGI has worked to clarify the distinctions between Nichiren Shoshu and Soka Gakkai. "This has been a process of defining Nichiren Buddhism apart from the relative exclusivism and rigidity of Nichiren Shoshu," he said.

"What has emerged -- as epitomized in the writings of SGI President Ikeda -- has been a modern, humanistic interpretation of Nichiren Buddhism, more befitting the pluralist society we live in today. One of the main themes of President Ikeda has been that 'religion exists for the sake of people and not the other way around.'"
Soka Gakkai Practice

As with all Nichiren Buddhism, Soka Gakkai practice is centered in the teachings of the Lotus Sutra. Members engage in daily daimoku, which is chanting the phrase Nam Myoho Renge Kyo, "Devotion to the Mystic Law of the Lotus Sutra." They also practice gongyo, which is reciting some part of the Lotus Sutra.

These practices are said to work an inner transformation, bringing one's life into harmony and a evoking wisdom and compassion. At the same time, SGI members take action on behalf of others, actualizing Buddha-nature in the world. The SGI-USA website provides a more comprehensive introduction to SGI's approach to Buddhism.

Bill Aiken of SGI-USA said,

"When things are difficult, it is tempting to look for someone stronger and more powerful than you -- be it a political leader or a transcendent being -- to save you from the trials and hazards of living. It is much harder to believe that you can find the resources you need by opening up the vast potential within your own life. The Daimoku of the Lotus Sutra -- Nam-myoho-renge-kyo -- is in a sense a bold affirmation of the positive potential of the Buddha that lies dormant both in the human heart and in our environment."
Kosen-rufu

The phrase kosen-rufu appears frequently in SGI literature. Roughly, it means to declare widely, to take forward like the current of a river or to spread out like a cloth. Kosen-rufu is the dissemination of Buddhism, peace and harmony in the world. Soka gakkai practice is intended to bring empowerment and peace into the lives of individuals, who can then spread that empowerment and peace to the world.

My impression is that SGI has matured considerably from the 1970s and 1980s, when the organization seemed consumed with frenetic proselytization. Today SGI actively reaches out to work with others on humanitarian and environmental projects. In recent years SGI has been especially supportive of the United Nations, where it is represented as an NGO (Non-Governmental Organization). The idea seems to be that nurturing understanding and good will through humanitarian work will allow kosen-rufu to manifest naturally.

Daisaku Ikeda said, "Simply put, kosen-rufu is the movement to communicate the ultimate way to happiness ツ―- to communicate the highest principle of peace to people of all classes and nations through the correct philosophy and teaching of Nichiren.ツ"

I asked Bill Aiken of SGI-USA if SGI is finding its niche within the great diversity of religion in the West. "I believe that the SGI is establishing itself as a human-centered religious movement based on the life-affirming tenets of the Lotus Sutra," he said. "The core principle of the Lotus Sutra -- that all living beings possess the Buddha-nature and are indeed potential Buddhas worthy of deep respect -- is an important message, especially in an era of religious and cultural division and the demonization of the 'other.'"

:D I love reading responses like this to religious threads...

Hahaha, I'm glad they are to your liking. At least now they serve a purpose, because the zealots developed immunity to them already. :D

I think you may be somewhat mistaken there. My intention was to offend you. Accordingly, it would be appropriate if you could take offence.

I think a person with strong faith and commitment are different from zealots or fanatics. SGI members are committed to realizing human happiness and world peace through culture and education.

Once again, Nichiren, WHAT are we supposed to discuss here on this thread?

Oh yeah?? Well, I'm committed to destroying humankind, causing world wide wars, spreading hate of culture and limiting education! Just like SGI, I'm gonna have a magic chant too!!

It's gonna be be "Oh Em Gee, Wha Za Faaaaak"

We'll get lots of members, like Iran, random destitute and angry African nations, and North Korea as a buddy and we'll have WAY more members than you! Plus we will promote wanton SEX, so it will insure we will have 70 times more members than you!

My cult will be called Super Urinal Xenophobes, or SUX for short. Who wants to join?

So yeah, all I see in this thread is a bunch of religious advertisement spam crap again. So, I guess you could say it's just saying, "SGI is soooo great la di da~" therefore, the thread is about why it is, or isn't great.

I'm on the side of it isn't great, and is just another superstitious chanting cult like any other religion.

Why don't you ? Find out for us how much of actual Buddhism is discussed at most meetings and publications and how much revolves around Ikeda and his writings. Is the drama ongoing regarding the bad relations between SGI and it's parent organization, Nichiren Shoshu? Do practices allow members to chant for whatever they want ? :D

"Buddhists athiests" so to speak. :P Then they should read the earliest records of the Buddha's life and teaching to live up to his outlook on human life, and what are they? They foster self-development in certain ways. The core is meditation, then other self-help...Because he was radically more interested in how we should live in this world than notions of karma and the afterlife. Far removed from the devotional piety and fundamental religiousity of much of Buddhism as we know it today 😌

How is that religion? Sounds more like pop psychology to me.
