THE INSTITUTE OF CETACEAN RESEARCH has announced ....

The research-base vessel Nisshin Maru, currently engaged in the Japanese whale research program in the Antarctic (JARPA II) was subject to attack today for about two hours by the New Zealand-registered watercraft Ady Gil following a brief encounter with the Bob Barker*, a vessel sent to the Antarctic by the antiwhaling group Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. The encounter with the Bob Barker occurred at 00:00JST.

In a manner similar to their 23 December attack on the Shonan Maru No. 2, at about 0300JST the Ady Gil came to collision distance directly in front of the Nisshin Maru bow repeatedly deploying and towing a rope from its stern with the intent to entangle the Japanese vessel's rudder and propeller. Further, the activists onboard the Ady Gil recurrently shoot a green laser device aiming at the Nisshin Maru crew and fired butyric acid-containing ball-like projectiles with a launching device. One of these projectiles landed in the Nisshin Maru's deck. 🙂

After broadcasting a warning message through a long range acoustic device (LRAD), the Nisshin Maru started its water cannons and proceeded to prevent the Ady Gil coming closer. Neither injuries to the Japanese crew nor damage to the Nisshin Maru resulted from the New Zealand watercraft's attack.
The Sea Shepherd extremism is becoming more violent. Aiming directly to the Nisshin Maru crew, the activists have repeatedly fired illegal high-power laser devices which can produce blindness when irradiated to the naked eye and have fired projectiles containing butyric acid, a substance highly hazardous to the human body including skin and eyes. Their actions are nothing but felonious behavior. In addition, their repeated deploying and abandonment of ropes designed to entangle the propeller of our navigating vessels ultimately ends becoming litter which is spoiling the Antarctic marine environment.
The Institute of Cetacean Research strongly condemns the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society extremist actions which threaten the safety of Japan's whale research vessels and their crews. Contrary to its claims to be a marine wildlife conservation group in reality they are dedicated to fund-rising and to spread violence under pretext of protecting whales.

Following last December attacks, Australia, the de facto home port country to the Steve Irwin neglected to take appropriate and objective actions when the activist's vessel briefly made a port call in Hobart. The Institute of Cetacean Research urges again all related nations including the Netherlands, the Steve Irwin's flag state, and New Zealand, the Ady Gil flag state, to take every means available to prevent the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society actions and strongly request that they observe their international obligations and deal with the Sea Shepherd in a strict and objective manner.
* While the Bob Barker briefly approached to the Nisshin Maru, the Steve Irwin which left Hobart on December 31 2009 has not appeared in the scene.
Photographs and video of the incidents in the Antarctic can be seen at: http://www.icrwhale.org/gpandsea.htm

When people post narrow minded opinions, I must admit it offends me.
That is the main reason for my post now.

In truth, neither the Sea Shepherds nor the Japanese Whaling Fleet are "in the right". Both of these organizations are attempting to take the law into their own hand, which is indeed illegal.

In regards to the sinking of the Andy Gil, I believe that decision by the Japanese Whaler's was rash. Based on the videos released of the ramming, the attack appeared unjustified. Note: I understand that the Sea Shepherds have rammed Japanese ships in the past; yet, at the time of the ramming the Andy Gil did appear to pose a great enough threat to warrant such an action. Honestly I do believe that if the sailors aboard the Andy Gil had been injured, Japan would be liable. Thankfully that did not occur because if it did, all hell would break loose.

Get a grip. They are flying a pirate flag, Japan has every right to blow their boat out of the water. (and they should IMO) Not to mention that the whalers are allowed a certain amount of whales each year, so they are breaking no law.

For starters, I'm pretty sure Japan wouldn't have the right to "blow them out of the water" as you said. I mean... they "could" don't get me wrong, but such action would be an international incident waiting to happen. I believe thats one of the reasons why the Japanese Whalers haven't hired a gun ship yet. They most likely have the money to do so, but such an action would be political suicide.

Also in regards to your claim that whaling activities are legal... yes and no. The Japanese Whalers are only allowed to whale for research... yet I'm pretty sure no research is really going on therefore making the act of whaling illegal. Of course I don't blame the Japanese. If I had the option to go around the law to make millions of dollars, I would do it too =D

On a side note: even if the whaling was "illegal" it happens in international waters. No government has the power to enforce laws in international waters really. If you've ever taken a political science class, one thing they teach you is if you can't enforce a law, it serves no purpose. The whaling laws are no different. I mean.... just look at all the resolutions the UN passes. How many of them actually mean anything? Not many.... not many : /

It's very clear,Why do you defend these terrorist acts axman ?
What do the rules mean to you ?

I don't defend their actions. I'm simply pointing out that both sides are wrong. How is that defending the terrorists actions?

On a side note: rules mean nothing if they can't be enforced.

My opinion is that the Sea Shepard people won't be happy until they get a martyr out of all this. It's a shame, because there are better ways for them to protest than this.

Your pretty sure? That is your evidence?

My response... does it matter if whaling is indeed illegal? Because thats not what my post is about. Honestly I myself don't really care if whaling is legal or illegal. I have no stake in the matter. All I am saying is 'claiming that the Sea Shepherds are the ONLY side at fault' is a major flaw in logic. I agree the Sea Shepherds tactics are illegal... but that doesn't make the ramming any more legal.

Alot of people say the ramming was justified because the Andy Gil was attempting to tie up the Japanese fleet's propellers. To be frank, if I had a choice I'd rather be on a boat that had its propellers tied then a boat that got split in two... and I'm pretty sure any sane person in the world would agree with me.

Thats all I am saying. Japanese T-Ramming of the Andy Gil was unjustifiable.
Note: If it had been a side swipe the action would have been justifiable... even the

You are fabricating the story, which is a typical tactics of Sea Shepard. 😊

Andy Gil rammed Japanese boat. The video of the Institute of Catacean Research is more valid as it's closer than SS video.

If you are a member of SS, please come to Japanese court.

um.. i'm not a member of the Sea Shepherds. I wouldn't get caught dead joining that group. Like I said... I have no stake in whaling. I really do not care.
Also just a warning... you shouldn't use the abbreviation SS. its not politically correct.

Can you link the video? Based on all the videos that I've seen (I think I've even seen the one that you are speaking of) the Japanese fleet T-Rammed the Andy Gil. Note: T-Ramming is not simply just hitting the other ship. It is deliberately turning 90 degrees into the other ship, hitting the opposite ship with the bow of your boat. The bow of the boat is the strongest part of the ship. It's actually the preferred way to ram if you want to cause maximum damage to your enemy, and the LEAST amount of damage to your ship. (we're speaking naval combat tactics of course).

Now claiming that in that instance the Andy Gil attempted to ram the Japanese boat is an interesting notion. I'll bite (as the phrase in america goes). I mean... it is possible. And if that where the case, then the Sea Shepherds are idiots. I mean... its simple physics... big boat vs little boat... you don't want to be on the little boat when you get into a ramming contest : /

However... if the Andy Gil purposfully rammed the whaling vessel... it also means that the Whalers got lucky. And unfortunatly for us both I don't believe in luck :sorry:

You better look for it by yourself at YouTube.

"SS" are taking risk to fabricate the story. It is their nature.

They know if the boat collide, smaller boat (SS) will be damaged, gaining more attention from uneducated anti-whaling suporters, and gaining more sympathy, and gaining more MONEY or donation.

In fact, US TV is broadcasting "Whale War" and collecting money from sponsors.

Ecoterrorists are acting in TV show and doing business.

true. I'll agree with you on that one. However, if the Japanese made no effort to get out of the Andy Gil's way... then legally they are still partially at fault. Let me give you a few examples....

your at a shooting range. Someone who believes gun's should be illegal stands in front of you, preventing you from shooting. You ask him to leave. He refuses. So you shoot regardless that he is in your way. If you hit him, you are liable for any injuries caused.

Example #2....
someone breaks into your house. They are unarmed. You shoot them without the person actually posing any physical threat. You are liable.

Now if the Japanese can prove that they attempted to avoid a collision (slowed speed down, attempted to change direction, ect.) then the Sea Shepherds are 100% at fault and should be thrown in jail.
I kind of find in interesting that you continue to say how "bad" the Sea Shepherds are. I've already agreed with you on that point. Its almost like your saying I can't believe the Sea Shepherds activities are bad unless I also believe that the Japanese Whalers are right... I'm sorry. I'm not a traditional American. I don't believe in white and black lines of logic.

(in other words, I don't think one person HAS to be right and one person HAS to be wrong. Its possible that they are both wrong or they are both right. Matters are never clear cut as politicians want you to think).

What is your aim ?

This Japan Forum is not a court. Pointless argument is a typical tactics of SS.

It is a shame they didn't sink the boat completely. Idiot activists...

thats why I posted. I'd agree they are idiotic activists... but that doesn't mean they deserve death. Japanese propaganda would say otherwise....

of course... its not just Japanese propaganda. I can't stand any propaganda... even American Propaganda. Thats why I created my own youtube show called the BS Hour :p because in the end of the day thats all politics are... bs :p

also continuing to compair a person's opinion to an organization inwhich that person has said they are against is a typical tactic used by state or corporate sponsored propaganda.

also.. SS.... BAD abbreviation. Of course... its a "good" abbreviation if you are a whaling lobbyist. But if you are a whaling lobbyist.... opinions can not possible be unbiased.

Honestly astroboy... are you unbiased? Your posts make me think you or someone you know works closely with the Japanese whalers. Not that I think thats a bad thing or anything... just noticing a very defensive tone in your posts. A defensive tone I've come to recogonize as being use by politicians unfortunately :(

on a side note: this forum has amazing emotes :p

In Japan, SS stands for Sea Shepard. Or some people say they are Sea Chicken, which is also stood for coward chicken.

BTW, are you uneducated ? Your tone sounds very uneducated to me, which is the same as SS members. 😊

Sea Chicken, or Coward chicken is more appropriate than SS. Mainly due to settlement still remaining due to world war II. After all SS could also refer to hitler's secrete army in world war II.... reason why I said it wasn't really appropriate.

BTW, are you uneducated ? Your tone sounds very uneducated to me, which is the same as SS members. 😊

There you go again saying my response is somehow related to an SS member.... which imo is still non-politically accurate abbreviation. Any person with half an education could tell you that.

and not to mention instead of answering my question about possibly knowing someone in the whaling operations.... you just accused me of being a sea shepherds member.... again..... which I hate to tell you.... is a tactic of american politicians :( I thought our country was the only one with stupid politicians trying to push a biased agenda... nice to know we're no longer alone. Welcome to the world of Capitalism at its finest.

P.S. If I was undereducated.... chances are I'd take a side in this matter. The uneducated are statistically the first to pick a side in a conflict.
