Support Thread for MEXT Scholarship Hopefuls

Man these last couple of days have been tough, waiting for the Embassy to reopen so I can contact them.

All I've got is around 12 hours left and I can call my contact at the Embassy - I'm so nervous, dang it!

It also doesn't help the fact that I've been home for the last few weeks, meeting with friends and explaining to everyone what the scholarship is about, which only further increases my "god I want it" feeling.

Anyway, here's a shoutout to all those who are still waiting: good luck to us all!

Quick Update:

It turned out that until now (Friday night here in Indonesia), I still have not receive the final result. I'm still very excited and hopeful, but for now I think it will best that I temporarily refrain myself from expecting the results to be out soon. For me, the wait is much harder when I place too much expectation for an early result announcement.

Nonetheless, I hope there will be more good news (success announcements) soon for friends in this thread!! The earlier, definitely the better. :D Wish you all luck and success!!

Well, called, and still nothing at my consulate. I talked to my contact there and she said she'd contact me as soon as anything came in (she's such a sweety).

Anyway, back to the waiting game.

they called me today..and no one from saudia selected for the undergraduate scholarship (3).......

I'm sorry to hear that.:( I know that undergraduate scholarship is very hard to obtain since there are only about 500 scholarships for all countries.

I am most sorry to hear this sad news. From what I know, 'just' getting the Japanese Embassy Recommendation Letter for undergraduate study is an incredible feat in itself.

That's incredibly unfortunate. I feel for you, having been rejected by immigration on a technicality before. It really, really sucks.

Take care of yourself.

Here.. same with Sehro, well.. I wish for the rest of you best luck ^^v !!

Since you went through this can you give us some of your experience, please?
Like, after this, did you go to Japan without a scholarship? If yes, I might want to ask you more things if you don't mind. Thank you =)

In my case, I had applied for a Shuugaku (pre-college) visa after having received a Ryuugaku (college) visa in the past.

It's complicated, but basically I was looking to study at Yamasa for language before going on to graduate study. Though my Ryuugaku visa was actually for activities like those of a Shuugaku visa, immigration thought it didn't match the normal pattern and did not see fit to grant me a visa. I was really upset about it, but I understand where they're coming from.

I found out that they would be fine if I applied to a university to receive a Ryuugaku visa, but would not grant a Shuugaku visa.

There's a lot more, but that's it in a nutshell. It was a hard experience, but the end result was to push me to go ahead with the second part of my plan, which was to go to graduate school (and thus apply for the MEXT scholarship).

I see, I'm sure it wasn't easy. Nothing's easy and I got to put that in mind if I want to continue living the way I want.

What's weird now that the embassy called me on 11:30 PM!! I answered hello but no one replied? I was planning to call them tomorrow anyway, so I'll ask about this.. I hope it's something good not a kid playing lol.

finally

First of all, i must say i feel so sorry for both of you : sehro and broken-dust !
i share in your grief .However, you should try once more next year as it is, i believe, quite possible .you're still young so ganbatte !
and still plenty of other opportunities the japanese government offers to students.
besides, you've lost anything since there's the research scholarship...and don't see it faaaaar...close your eyes and there you are. three years at university and between us what are three years in a man's life ???
i must tell you something; you know, i do love japan and all what is related to it since my youth.despite that, i didn't have any idea about such a wonderful chance to further my studies in this BELOVED country "NIPPON" when i succeded five years ago at the baccalaureate examination (i mean undergraduate studies).
However, when i entered university i heard an echo on a scholarship ...heee naniii :? could i....possibly get there at least once in my life ??? 😄😄😄
well since that moment i persevered and put all my strengh in order to see my dream come true studied so hard that i came finally first at my university then what ? i applied to this scholarship .
Personally i think you made your first step and you must be congratulated for that.but it was not your fault and just keep it an objective that you MUST achieve soon or later .AS i did !
if you really WANT IT then you'll get it god's willing just ganbatte kudasai !!!
I must tell everybody that i received an sms from the embassy yesterday and guess what ?
:win::win::win: finallyyyyyyyyy i have been accepted by the japanese misnistry. all what is left, they say, is to wait until the end of january to know at which university i'll be placed .
once more 👍🌹🎈🎈🎈
P.S: just wanted you to know that our embassy received a telegraph or something on december 28th :cautious: .well anyway they did not work the whole week so it's quite comprehensible .
to the rest of us please just patience i know it's toooooo difficult .
just a few days more 🙂

I called the Embassy and so far they receive nothing so I'm still waiting. :p
Congratulation Bachir. :-)

Hi Bachir!
Extremely glad to hear from you again with this very good news!
CONGRATULATION Bachir!! :D

Congratulations to everyone who got the scholarship!
And to those who didn't get it this year, just keep trying!
I applied to this scholarship in 2006, and I didn't get it. I did much better this year because I already had the experience and also because, by insisting on applying, I let then know I was really serious about it.
(I also got to improve my research project, which made it easier to get a letter of acceptance)

So, ganbare!!! If this is what you really want, don't give up!

Greetings everyone,

Well, I got the call from my consulate. I've been selected as an alternate.

I'm pretty sad right now. While my chances are non-zero, they definitely seem to be unlikely now.

why alternate ?

hi nall-ohki !
why did they put you as an alternate ?
does that mean you might not get it ?
why the hell are they playing such a game . not even a game it's your FUTURE !
still playing with your nerves...may you finally have that chance .i hope so !

when are you supposed to get a definitive answer ?

No idea why they put me as an alternate. The most common reason for alternates is that they had more good applicants than they could grant scholarships.

I'm guessing my chances aren't great, but they won't give me any information about when I'll know or my chances of being upgraded. I'm guessing it can't be too good, though.

I won't have a definitive answer until they either tell me, or April comes, I'm guessing.

Nall-ohki, according to the application guidelines, alternates are sort of "in the running" until the end of July in case there could be spots freed up by people set to go in October instead of April... so it's still alive until then, I guess.
I'll still be pulling for ya to get a spot, I know how much you want to make it back to Japan!
If not this, perhaps there are other outlets that'll get you there...

Hmmm... end of July, huh?

Out of curiosity, where are you getting your information? I don't recall seeing those particular guidelines.

It's on the guidline PDF that's posted on this page:

You need to add the www

Ah. Never noticed that contingency. Thanks, that helps me know what's going on somewhat.

By the way, that particular passage has a terrible translation - I had to go to the Japanese to make sure of its meaning.

Yeah, the English language version is sometimes a little vague or unclear in places, but I haven't bothered with the Japanese version, just too much formal language for me to trudge through at the moment, haha!
That's a deficiency I'll need to alleviate here soon...

The thing that bothers me most about the lack of information is that there is no information about being picked as an alternate except that you'll know for sure by the end of July if you get upgraded.

It makes me honestly wonder if everyone who got the embassy recommendation but did not get selected is basically an "alternate".

Meaning: "alternate" = "all non-recipients"

It's almost rude to ask, but it's the only way I know of getting more information: Did anyone out there for the research scholarship not get the scholarship and told something other than "you're an alternate"? In other words, does anyone know about anyone actually being rejected?

Hi Everyone... I just found this forum... First of all, congrats to everyone who got their results.. And Good luck for those who're waiting...
