I'm reading this book about this Japanese woman's adventures in London (don't get too excited, it's actually really boring), and I came across this sentence:

She's describing an unpleasant past event. I'm pretty sure I get the meaning, something like "if I could erase the memory of that day I would", but I don't get how both the もの and なら fit together. Does あ の日の記憶を消せるもの mean "thing that can erase the memory of that day"? なら means something like "provided that...", "as long as there is" etc, so it would mean "if/provided that there was もの then I want to erase it for good".

What do you all reckon?

If the memory of that day were a thing that could be turned off, I would do it.

Even more natural would be "If it were possible to erase the memory of that day, I would."

本当の意味がもう分かっていると思い、それが書いてありました(if I could erase the memory of that day I would)。

Ahh, so you have to think of ものなら as the actual conditional. So ものなら is basically the same as ば or なら, it just adds more emphasis to the feeling of the sentence.

この場合は、ものは、物質、physical thing able to be erased を指しているかな。。。

Thing that can be seen and touched, tangible substance

Just to add to the explanation:

ものなら is the abbreviated form of the fixed phrase ものならば。

It is used to describe possibility (particularly of something that is considered impossible).

もの is a nominalizer. Its function is similar to that of こと and の。
