In class today, we were introduced to 「に比べると」, 「と比べると」, 「に比べて」, and 「と比べって」. My sensei said that the four are essentially about the same and that we needn't worry too much about when to use which, as most Japanese folks don't either.
However, regarding the particles, I believe he kind of said that 「に」 is used when comparing something to something else in a "for example," random-selection kind of way, whereas 「と」 is more used when comparing things like look the same or similar. But perhaps I misunderstood.
Regardless, could I please receive some guidance about the differences among the four versions of the construction that I typed above, especially the subtle differences between the usage of 「に」 and 「と」?
As for the verb's form, I suppose this essentially is standard, relying on the form of the sentence you're making. For example:
(1.) リンゴはバナナに比べると、もちろん違うところがありますね。 (Profound.)
(2.) 友達の新しい携帯電話を見て、僕の携帯と比べて、あまりかっこよくないと思った。
Additionally, this would indicate that other forms, such as 「比べれば」 and 「比べたら」 are legal as well, but are they used often?
よろしくお願いします。
