Crime Tokyo sees increase in attacks on paramedics

The Tokyo Fire Department has issued a warning after a rise in violent assaults on ambulance crews. In one recent case, emergency workers were attacked so severely that they themselves required hospital treatment, according to Nippon News Network on 16 June.

The incident occurred in May after paramedics responded to a report of an injured person lying collapsed outdoors. As they attempted to assist, the person suddenly became aggressive and reportedly threatened the crew, shouting that he would kill them, stab them with a knife and make it impossible for them to walk safely in public. The man then launched a violent attack, repeatedly punching and kicking one paramedic more than a dozen times. The assault left emergency workers injured while carrying out their duties.

The violent outburst took the original ambulance crew out of service for five hours and tied up vital emergency resources. According to the Tokyo Fire Department (TFD), interference with rescue crews is on the rise. While 2025 saw a total of 24 such incidents, there have already been 15 cases reported by the end of May 2026, outpacing the previous year. With ambulance dispatches hitting a record-breaking pace in 2026, the TFD on Tuesday warned it will not hesitate to take firm legal action against anyone obstructing their duties.

I think it's safe to say he's either mentally ill or taking some sort of mind-altering substance. I doubt it was alcohol.
