A recent Koala Sleep Japan K.K. survey revealed that sleep deprivation is a widespread issue in Japan. Many Japanese adults are dissatisfied with both the duration and quality of their sleep despite a significant portion reporting getting a seemingly adequate amount of rest. The survey polled 1,000 working adults aged 20-60 and found that the most common sleep duration on workdays was between five and six hours. While the ideal sleep time for respondents was around seven hours, the average was significantly lower at five hours and 56 minutes. As a result, a large majority (74.6%) felt they were not getting enough sleep:

I used AI to extrapolate the data below.
- Barriers to Adequate Sleep:
- Stress and Time Constraints: A majority of respondents (52.2%) struggled to achieve their ideal sleep hours due to stress, work commitments, household chores, and childcare responsibilities.
- Digital Distractions:** Social media and video streaming services were identified as significant contributors to sleep disturbances.
- Sleep Duration vs. Satisfaction:
- Length Doesn't Guarantee Quality: Longer sleep duration did not necessarily correlate with higher levels of sleep satisfaction.
- Gender and Age Disparities:
- Women in their 60s reported the highest satisfaction despite relatively short sleep times.
- Women in their 20s, despite having the most extended average sleep duration, experienced the lowest satisfaction levels.
- Factors Affecting Sleep Quality
- Restlessness and Fatigue: The most common reasons for dissatisfaction with sleep quality were difficulty resting well and feeling fatigued.
- Sleep Disruptions: Waking up in the middle of the night and having trouble falling asleep were also significant concerns.
A Koala Sleep Japan representative said, "To improve sleep quality relative to time, it is crucial to reduce the number of times you wake up while sleeping." Since some people are awakened by the impact of their partners or their tossing and turning, they advise people to select bedding items carefully.
