Sanja Matsuri (三社祭, "Three Shrine Festival") is one of Tōkyō's three largest Shintō festivals. The festival is held in honour of Hinokuma Hamanari, Hinokuma Takenari, and Hajino Nakatomo, the three men who established and founded the Sensō-ji Buddhist temple. Sanja Matsuri is held on the third weekend of May at Asakusa Shrine.

@mdchachi, @Haruto Uzumaki and I spent a lovely but scorching hot day exploring today's festival activities in Asakusa. Described as one of Japan's most boisterous festivals, we were pleasantly surprised by the orderly conduct of participants and spectators.

Described as one of Japan's most boisterous festivals, we were pleasantly surprised by the orderly conduct of participants and spectators.

I guess you'd need to stick around until evening to see the tattooed guys pull of their tops and get boisterous.

I think you covered all my shots in your album. If I can find something unique I'll add it. I do want to say for future people looking for info on this matsuri, through a happy accident we ended up meeting a little farther from the temple than expected and ended up at a staging area where many neighborhoods were getting ready to start their mikoshi "parade" to head to the temple (right around 35.7172142,139.7942612). Basically you'll see the same thing you'll see later at the temple except with much fewer crowds. There were almost no tourists there. Plus if the weather is hot or rainy you can go into the covered road depicted here where some of the mikoshi will pass through.

It was enjoyable, everyone was lively and I liked to see that even the older Japanese people were a part of carrying those heavy mikoshi
