Our museum has a Japanese Incense bowl and goblet that we know little about. It has a signature on the base which may be 立石 勝五郎 Tachi'ishi Shōgorō or I have found by searching for the Japanese letters Katsugoro Tateishi. One article says the bowl is an incense stand. Are we on the right track?

The signature is 立石藤五郎 (TATEISHI Fujigorō). Other readings of the family name are possible, but Tateishi is the most plausible) .
I couldn't find anything online, but there are other potters with the name of TATEISHI (and similar, three-kanji given names), so it may be a known family or school of potters.

Good catch. Definitely looks more like 勝,
so 勝五郎 (TATEISHI Katsugorō), who does show up in a search - unfortunately he only shows up on a dodgy Russian auction site, but it is a slight indication that there are some pieces out there from this potter.

Hi Majestic, This is great. So just to clarify is the name TATEISHI, Katsugoro as I found, even though dodgy site, so then I know the name to ask the museum in Japan? The piece is the same shape which as you say may indicate from family of potters with the same surname.
